This player was tested with gold disks written at 4x

that was 24.50 minutes long. The other disks that worked were
no more than 22 minutes long. The long disk worked inanother
DVD player so it seems to be my player. |

Takes all my CD-R and CD-RW. Needs to switch to NTSC
mode til play MP3's correct (annoying if you live in a
PAL-world). Has a nice overview feature that shows 9 pictures
of a single VCD movie and makes you jump to that part of the
movie with a press on a button (1-9)... Had a few sync.

MPEGS were in weird format (not 100% vcd

I don`t what the previous people are doing
wrong, because I just bought the ad500a at circuit city for 99
dollars and it plays vcd and svcd on cdr just fine.I'm using
imation and memorex discs.Picture quality is great, haven't got
xvcd to work yet.
The 500A plays CD-Rs, the 500
without the suffix seemingly does not. Great player for $99,
no reason to spend a dime more for doing VCDs or the amount of
DVD movies most people watch. Digital output on the unit is by
Coax only. Great player, I have yet to be able to get the unit
to produce the skipping symptoms some people report, that may
be a difference between the 500 and 500A though.
It
play some CDR from Staples that lok silver on the buttom. From
all copy's that i have and try on apex 600A half works on 500.
$40Dollars does not worted all the hussle
Apex 500A I
went to circuit city and tried to get them to let me test the
display.. they wouldn't allow me to do anything. So I bought
the 500A. I have the Apex 600, so I tried every CDR I already
had burnt. It plays anything I threw at it Imation,PNY,Sony
and the all popular $10 spindle. This player is awesome for
the money. It doesnt play mp3s , but for $100 what do you
expect? This is my an XMAS present for my sister by the way !
I tried using Memorex CD-R , it worked fine i tried
touse Memorex CD-RW it said the tracks were identified but did
not reproduce would try more brands Played Audio CD's branded
and ones created at home both worked fine
This plays
all, Don't be bitching about it, I used all kinds of cds' and
i know for a fact that the no name 100 packs COMP-USA cds work

I got this DVD player at K-Mart on sale for $99.99! It
was a steal!!!! Works great with a bunch of No-Name 80 min
cd-r's i picked up at Staples. Using Nero 5.0, I've got great
picture and great sound! Overall, I got an awesome price on a
DVD player that will pay me back ten fold.
I've tested
xvcds on the apex at 480x480 mpeg1 and 2000kbps woks great
This is a very forgiving player. It will play VCD's
that were encoded at a non-standard bitrate: video-1244 kbps,
audio-128 kbps. Video is better than standard VCD and audio is
fine (burned with Nero 5.0).
IT also plays SVCD's you
must have the FIRST firmware from what I can tell. It also
plays MP3's as well and as everyone knows, the first firmware
also lets you enter the diag menu to turn off protection and
other shit :)
SVCD on CD-R but does not fastforeward
or rewind.Works great with verbatum and Memorex cd-r. I tried
Smart and friendly brand cd-rw and it also works great. I use
Tmpgenc. It has templates for svcd, vcd 1150kbps,and vcd
1246kbps.I burn on Nero as it has a burning template for
svcd. All just mentioned play fine on the Apex AD-600a
I bought a brand-new player today. Apparently the
statement that only the first firmware plays SVCDs is
incorrect. I used no-name CD-R, non-gold. Also, it would
appear as if the MP3 gaps/skips are gone.
I used Sony
CD-R & CD-RW worked well in VCD. SVCD worked but was
glitchy starting & had to reload to restart. I used Nero
5.0 after reading these pages. I did use Nero to burn a slide
show & it was excellent in VCD. Glitchy in SVCD. One thing
you should know about the remote |

Read reviews here and bought this player (mainly for
SVCD) at Circuit City for $149. I couldn't be happier. Plays
SVCD on CD-R and CD-RW with no problems (I'm really pleased
with the quality). VCD and XVCD on CD-R and CD-RW with no
problems. Beautiful picture. The manual needs some work, and
the MP3 menus aren't very intuitive - but it works great. I'd
highly recommend this drive. Cheap CD-R/CD-RWs work fine.
Bought this machine on what I read here took back the
Samsung 611 for this machine and I love it. Plays Cheapie cdr,
cdrw's NO PROBLEM. BUY THIS MACHINE. $129 after rebates at
Circuit City. I watched Videos all bloody night.
No
problems, other than a little slow to load CD-R/RW. My
Tsunami-Nero SVCDs play and look great. Killer deal for $179
at CC.
Great player. Seems to be a AD-600(A) with out
the bugs (and the secret menu). I use Office Depot, the
cheapest I could find, brand CD-R and they work great. And for
$150 via Circuit City, its a steal. |

Seeking seems to work fine for DVD and There is an
8-character limit on MP3 filenames (effectively only
6-character after truncation when there are 2+ files with the
same first 8-characters) When the unit is left on, quality
degrades. (eg. color bleeding) The unit does NOT support song
shuffling with MP3 CDs, nor does it support shuffling across
audio CDs.
VCD's. But my homemade SVCD disks cause the
movies to 'reset' to the beginninng when trying to seek. So
far, I've only test SVCD's on CD-RW, trying almost all the
various VBR encodings with TMPGenc in regards to this seeking
problem.
This is a pretty cool player. It's a three
disk dvd player, karaoke player, and plays all of the cdr/rw's
(gold/green cdr from Fry's mostly)I have tried. I use
tmpgenc(with english patch) and nero 5.0. I have made VCDs and
SVCDs, both work----sweeeet!
I tried making a VCD with
tmpgenc (with english patch) and Nero 5.0 using a PNY CDR.
Didn't work at all. Video was extremely blocky and audio was
all broken up. I then used a Radio Shack brand CDRW and it
worked fine. From other posts it seems that many CDR/RWs work
well, just don't bother with PNY brand CDRs. I paid $199 at
American Electronics - great price for a 3 disk changer with
all of the features, just wish it had a secret menu like the
others to eliminate the video jitter on some store bought
DVDs.
Does exactly what Apex claims without a hitch!
At least what I have tested so far. Burned several SVCDs using
TMPGEnc v12 w/English patch and Nero 5.x on TDK, Sony, and
Imation CD-R and CD-RWs. No problem, playback was excellent
(both video and audio). Used settings for TMPGEnc SVCD
template found at

There is one cdr that worked great. Its a no-name

playing after a few seconds.
I found a CompUSA brand
that works great every time. It has no name but the product
number is SKU #260896
Only brand I have found that
played, with occasional skips, is an OLD HP CD/RW which was
originally shipped with a 7110p CDRW drive. Tested
unsuccessfully: Pacific Digital, Memorex, Yamaha CDRWs. All
brands of CDR show 'no disc' on the player. Only tested with
VCD 2.0
Compusa no name brand p/n 274612 worked
flawlessly. no other cd-r media I have tried has worked. Also
got it to work with Compusa 4x cdrw media, but picture would
skip around a lot. :)

I own a JVC XV-521BK and
I'm very surprised it does not read SVCD on CD-R ! (I tried
the NERO_SVCD.NRG test image found on the excellent
http://www.planete-numerique.com/Pages/Svcd/Svcdtest.htm on
SONY and TARGA CD-R) It is the same hardware as the JVC
XV-523GD. The only difference is the case (Gold instead of
Black). So what's the problem ? If anybody knows more, don't
hesitate to contact me for further testing. ---
[email protected]
After consulting JVC Web
site, I doubt about the line JVC XV-523GD. Are you sure of
this support ? JVC reports that this player reads DVD Video,
CD CD-R/RW and Video CD. Nothing about SVCD. Could you give me
the E-mail of the person who made the test so we can run the
same tests ? Thanks, ---

CDRW= works very well. (Try to burn at 1x-speed for best
result) Traxdata CDR (Silver)= works.. but not very reliabel.
The player at time has difficults reading the media.. (Try to
burn at 1x-speed for best result) To be able to fast

great! Have had no problems. Does not read Imation or Sony
CDR. VCD menu: insert music cd, press [stop], press [menu],
press [9], press [1-all], press [open] a new menu comes on to
turn on vcd player. Region menu: start with "no disk", press
[menu], press [open], press [5] a menu asks you to choose a
region 1-6, press [mute] and the word ALL will appear.
Does not work with Imation media of any sort (cdr nor
cdrw), Works perfectly with other media, however.. I've
succesfully used memorex cdrw's in this as well as prime
perepherials 8x 80minute cdr's Also, my unit was made in late
99 and seems to have different firmware.. to activate vcd
playback I had to put a disc in, press stop, menu, 9, open cd,
1-all, 1-all, open cd again, then it will pop up a menu asking
if you want to enable vcd support, press 1.. if it opens the
cd tray, you did it wrong.
There is an error on this
part of the PLayer's INformation: Region menu: start with "no
disk", press [menu], press [open], press [5] a menu asks you
to choose a region 1-6, press [mute] and the word ALL will
appear. It Should be: Region menu: Turn on the player with no
disc in the tray Press menu Press 9 Press open Press 5 Press
mute Press OK Press exit |

Spoke to Oritron Rep., gave me instructions on setting
up the newer models. CompUSA cheap CDR's do not work. CompUSA
CDRWs work great burning with Nero. First, place a music CD in
the DVD drawer and close: When the CD is playing, use the
remote control to: press [STOP] press [MENU] press [1] press
[INDEX] press [OPEN] (open/close drawer) You will now see a
new menu option on your TV....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If this does not work (depends on software version) then use
this sequence: First, place a music CD in the DVD drawer and
close: When the CD is playing, use the remote control to:
press [STOP] press [MENU] press [9] press [INDEX] press [OPEN]
(open/close drawer) You will now see a new menu option on your
TV
Needs remote hacks for VCD and multi-region (same
as DVD100/DVD200). Will auto-convert PAL VCD to NTSC, though
you need to stop and resume-play a couple of times. Won't work
on CD-Rs (though only tested 2x Imation media). Does work on
CD-RWs though.

The Panasonic A110 DVD Player would only PLAY the vcd
when encoded at a 25fps. The audio was not playing with the
setting to stereo, so I changed it to dual channel and this
works. I used the TMPEnc encoder in my experimenting. SVCD was
not even possible for me to attempt and most likely won't work
with what I came across with Adaptec. Whenenver I encoded a
file as mpeg-2, when adding the file to adaptec, it alarmed
with detailed errors of what settings it stated would not be
playable in a vcd or dvd player. Being stubborn, I burned the
cd anyway and tried to play it, no such luck. I was able to
manage to get rid of all the alarms with the exception of
system clocking error. After much experimenting with the
settings, I changed the system information to reflect MPEG-1
VCD. I was good to go after that, adaptec did not respond to
me with any other unacceptable errors that would cause it not
to be playable. I was then able to play the vcd with this
setting along with the 1st paragraph that was specific to the
Panasonic DVD player I think. As far as MP3's, it has worked
in the past. Can't think for the life of me which media and
settings I used for it to work.
Plays SVCD. Plays all

Suprisingly it plays the Cheap CompUSA CDRW media
(4x).. Tis a shame it does not work with the CD-R media (of
any brand: Sony, Memorix, TDK, Verbatium, and Maxell). You
have to power off the unit and turn it on with the media in
it. Once you play the first one, you can swap disks with ease.
I have a Panasonic A120 that plays VCDs burnt on
Memorex CDRWs.. never had one fail yet. I have used cheaper
CDRWs and they didn't work But burning with EZ CD CReator 4.0
and The Memorex have always been good so far!
Have
tryed an Acer CD-RW on and Acer 4x-4x-32x and it worked with
choppy results. Video kept pausing and the video showed up in
blocks after it came back. Haven't tried VCD's with other
CD-RW's but music works on a DISC CD-RW. Music is also choppy
and skips.
Got some Memorex CDRW platinums and worked
very well. Only problem is that I burned it with Nero 5 2,
after about 20 minutes into the VCD it begins to slow down
somewhat, however making chapters stops this from happening
made a couple of music videos from muchmusic then put them on
vcd and it turned out excellent. Used only memorex cdrw.
Works very well with Memorex Platinum Cd-Rw. Doesn't
work with Samsung Cd-rw. It doesn't play Cd-r.

got it to recognize the same disc again. Go figure). Tried

Have tested my player with XVCD with the following
parameter: MPEG1 CBR 480x576 25fps with 1600 kb/s and 224 kb/s
audio. This combination works great will try to push
videodatarate higher. Very good quality Software: Nero 5.x +
TMPEG
The player works with XVCD 480x576 PAL 25fps and
a videorate of 2524 kbit/s. The quality of the video is very
good. One point seems to be very important, that is you have
to demultiplex and that multiplex the MPEG stream with TMPEG
as VideoCD no standard, otherwise you will only get Video with
totaly broken audio. If you use the Panasonic MPEG encoder
don't forget to insert the missing GOP header.
About
the ff/rew issue: After updating my player's firmware to v9.23
I was happy to find it forwarding/rewinding NTSC VCDs without

VCD's worked fine using both CD-R Media
and CD-RW media. Even worked with higher than VCD standard
bit-rate movies but not with VBR movies. Used both cheap CD-R
media as well as brand name discs with every brand working
well. Didn't test SVCD as I had lots of trouble creating
working SVCD movies. Image quality for DVD movies wasn't as
good as some players I've seen but it wasn't that bad either.
All in all a decent player for those interested in VCD CD-R
playback.
I tested vcdz with Ritek (light green) Kodak
(silver) and with Verbatim CD-RW. It played them all
flawlessly ! I love it. It also plays XVCDs but they must be
in standard format ex: if the resolution is PAL 384x288(?) the
frame rate MUST be in PAL format also 25 fps. I had one vid
that was PAl resolution but 30 frames per second and instead
of playing it full screen it only displayed it in the left
upper corner or the TV.. .weird.. anyways, the image quality
is superb ! it was deffinetly worth the 390 $ canadian
I have an experience with a VHS recorded in VCD... The
sound is very good and surround is great! It apears to have an
extra process to surround. I make a anime VCD and test with
VHS simultaneously and the VCD destroy(!) with the sound!
Played everything I threw at it. Cdr,cdr-w, any copy
speed, 1x,2x,4x, many types of medial. Used nero and

414 will incorrectly identify the disc as a regular audio CD.
Leaving the disc in the tray, powering the 414 off and back on
usually resolves the issue.
GREAT DVD player! Plays
burnt VCDs on every type of CD-R media I've tested. Works on
Maxell, TDK, Sony, Memorex, even those crappy CompUSA discs,
anything! Works on all CD-RW media I've tested including
shitty Pacific Digital discs! Video quality for DVDs is great
with S-Video or the new component RGB connections. Does not
play MP3.
i have only tried burning my vcd on cdrw and
it worked. i used princo discs which i think are not so good.
Sometimes green blocks come up on the screen and the video
gets choppy.
I have been using this DVD player to play
VCD's from everywhere, on any type of media imaginable. If the
disc is recorded at 1x or 2x I never have a problem. I have
been doing this for 2 YEARS. This and the 525 both are amazing
at playing VCD. If you see green blocks, its not the DVD
player, its the movie itself, or try recording at slower
speed/different media. I dont even use it for DVD's VCD only.

It has an awesome mpeg-2 and mpeg decoder in it. It
played any svcd that I threw at it with awesome clarity. It
played svcds that were made from really crappy mpegs, and
played them without a hint of those stupid blocks that appear
from a low data rate in high motion. I used blue-bottomed tdk
cd-rs. I love this player. Just make sure that the svcd is
compliant to its region code. |

Very good player, plays everything i need. Some people
says, player keeps some "strange" noise, but i never notify
that kind a problem (?). Maybe its supermarket "super-hifi"
speakers? ;)
Just tried a mini dvd and unfortuently it
would not play it (it saw it as a regular "cd" instead). I
used the sonic dvd it program and followed all steps plus
trying several burn methods of my own (it also helps that this
program supported my burner), but yes this is one thing that
the player will not play
Play XVCD MPEG1 704x576 video
2500kb/s audio 224 kb/s
I have found that this thing
will play everything. I personally use Memorex CD-R's, but it
even plays those sorry CompUSA CD-R's too. Too bad its being
discontinued but I hear the Pioneer DV-333 is taking its
place.
Just to add a note that this dvd player wont
play XVCD's at any other resolution than DVD PAL/NTSC
resolutions NTSC 720x480 or PAL 704x576 Otherwise you just end
up with a small picture in the corner. Also has trouble with
XVCD bitrates that are too high. It just skips.
Plays
CD-R recorded on all sorts of blank media - Blue, Green and
Gold. Even the VCD's created on unbranded Chinese green CD-R's
work with it! Plays on CD-RW media as well
I just
wanted to correct some more info i have read, as i own this
machine as well. the pioneer 525 will not read any kind of
video cd with a bitrate higher then 2500. I also wanted to
correct the following info: "any other resolution than DVD
PAL/NTSC resolutions NTSC 720x480 or PAL 704x576 Otherwise you
just end up with a small picture in the corner" This
information is not entirely true, I use a Dazzle for my stuff,
and the Dazzle captures at 352 x 240. This is what i use for
my svcds, this i |

Generally, plays SVCD fine, even non-standard up to
704x568; the bitrate limit seems to be around 3kbps. Will
properly play SVCDs with heavy VBR, even with ultra-low
bitrates. Has problems with scaling 480 pixel width still
frames to full resolution (sometimes works, sometimes not),
can't play mpeg segment streams (i.e., animated menus). The
audio selection is somewhat annoying, as it goes through Track
1 Stereo, Track 1 Left, Track 1 Right, Track 2 Stereo etc.
This player plays all cd's. It even plays data cd's,
this means it will play the track. But afcourse no picture and
no sound. It just reads every cd you throw at it.

Although if you want to add i found by a fluke that it read
memorex blue bottom cdrs. The rest i tried (it was a lot) it
rejected and spit it back out. thanks. ALso it is not capaable
of playing highrates or svcd. It will only play normal rate
stuff. thanks
well it seems now that if you buy the
Fuji 50 pack spindles (80min and 74min), the bottoms are now
very light blue (unlike before) and come close to the memorex
blue bottoms. So i tested a few and it can now read these as
well. Please also note that i am not using the "audio cds",
rather regular computer data ones. thanks
shortly ago
i sent in some info about this player being able to play the
fuji spindle type cdrs. Well this is now a 50/50 situation.
What played on my player did not play on my friends 606d. and
when it did it spazzed out after a minute or so. So if you
plan on using the fuji cdrs on this, use them at your own
risk. the memorex blue bottoms still work and play great on
all players(606d players) tested with them.

better TmgEnc it just works great, I have a good picture, and

The distinguish feature of this DVD player is the
Karaoke function. There are two microphone inputs on the
front. VCDs made from many brands (cheap/expensive) CD-Rs and
Cd-RWs worked like a charm. However, SVCD is another story.
The latter is only recognized as audio CD on this DVD player.
P.S. With this list getting larger and larger (~350K in file
size), do you think you need a database (i.e. MySQL) to store
all this data. In addition, users can enter the data
themselves which will save you time. Another benefit would be
searching capabilities. Instead of scroll down to one's DVD
player, one can search the whole list. Just a thought. PHP and
MySQL rules!! If you are interested, I would volunteer some of
my time to help you setup. Cheers, Kai |

Works perfectly!! and is extremely goodlooking too!!
Hi, I have tested today the Samsung DVD 611 PAL
version player at a friend´s place. It can NOT play MiniDVDs !
I have tested various miniDVDs and all don´t play ! It also
can not play CD-RW SVCDs, just CD-R SVCDs at least with my
Media. Also the integrated DVD ROM drive is much slower in
CD-R mode than my Yamakawa 780 drive ! It did also play
720x576 SVCDs but these were really slow and jerky, because
the drive seems only to run in 2x speed in SVCD mode ! Thus
the data rate of over 5 Mbits/sec of the clips was too much
data for it, so it was slow and skippy... But at least it can
play them, so I could author the 720x576 SVCDs with lower data
rate and then they are okay also with that player !
Plays on both Memorex CDR and CDRW, but lots of
skipping and freezing have make viewing homemade VCD's
impossible.
This player has trouble with CD-R (It's
not supposed to work at all) but I've found that any
Silver-Blue media will generally read OK. Cheap 'Pacific
Digital' discs I had lying around play VCD fine. MP3 is a
different story, it skips no matter what media I throw in.
Strange, as where is someone going to buy a commercial silver
CD with an ISO filesystem and MP3's on it?
So far i
have got a vcd, svcd and an xvcd burned on a verbatium cd-rw
and on a Hi-Val cd-rw to work, you may have to open and close
the drive once or twice to get it to work if it stops loading,
it CAN play mp3s but i have only tried it on a cd-rw and it
skips but it does have a list of all the songs so it may work
on cd-r. This player cannot read Fujifilm blue bottoms at all,
it can read vcds made on the gigastorage 80 |

I tried to burn a VCD with Nero 5, using a 74 minute
Traxdata Gold CDR - didn't work. The same media worked fine if
I burned it as a SVCD instead - go figure.
The Samsung
DVD 709 plays VCD's created on Traxdata CD-R silver and
Memorex CD-R. It plays commercially pressed VCDs, but I've
never been able to get it to play my CD-R VCDs at all. I use
Adaptec Easy CD and Memorex CD-Rs. Two friends can both play
my CD-R VCDs on their (different brand) players, so I think
I'm creating them properly. the samsung 709 will play 74minute
Infinity digital cdr every time burn with adaptec 4 copy cd it
is the only discs that work for copying video cds
OK
like I have tried EVERY "on the shelf" CD-r's and CD-rw's anf
NOTHING works. The ONLY thing that has worked was the OLD

save your money and go with a better player
LEAD DATA
80min works fine, but is the only it will accept. I use Nero
to burn.
The CD's that I have been using are Digital
Media. I have used both 74 & 80 Min. ones. The CDRW that
it worked with was Verbatim DataLifePlus 10x. The CD Burner
used was a Plextore 12/10/32. This DVD player WILL NOT PLAY
VCDz created using CDRWIN. My VCDz always work when I use
Fireburner or Nero.
works ok with traxdata silver 74
(not 80), works best with megadata 74, most brands do not work
! cd-rw ok though.
I tried it with non-branded 74min
cdr and it worked. The DVD player took a while trying to read
the VCD but it worked fine. I used TMPEGenc to encode the VCD
and Nero to burn it to CDR.

These are currently on sale at Best Buy (12/2/00). best
Buy says it plays mp3s, cdrs and cdrw's in-store and on the
website. It plays mp3s with some occassional skipping (samsung
website makes no mention of the mp3 ability). It plays VCDs
burned on CDR media but *not* CDRW. In fact, I couldn't get
any CDRW's to work...even the expensive platinum Memorex on
mine. That was trying it for dad. may work for music. The CDR
works great (I used Imation) for audio, mp3, and a burned VCD
test. No skipping at all. be careful with this unit as I had
to return one as it didn't play anything but regular dvd and
factory pressed vcd. These are made in Taiwan at Best Buy, not
Canada, so CDRs work. If someone finds a brand of cdrw that
works, please let me know. I recommend this player, though the
mp3 menu is cryptic. They are currently on regular price of
$199 at Best Buy.
Says 'MP3 Music Playback in CD/CDR'
on the box, but it skips -- badly. USA Samsung support says
MP3 isn't supposed to work [???]. Manual says nothing about

Plays the sample SVCD OK. DVD video quality excellent,
as was audio. Plays audio CD's on CDR's ok. Does not play
MP3's, skips constantly even though the US website currently
says that it will. I apparently purchased a "Canadian" unit.
*****CAUTION***** After several rounds of Emails to Samsung I
was advised that the DVD-711 as sold in different countries

specifications and "Samsung Canada does yet support MP3 CD-R
files on these devices". Unless you know the market that they
were built for (remember...they all have the same DVD-711

problems.

the quality of disc) this model will not even read the disc,

I get good results with acer CDR,s. Burned at one speed
with Adaptec easy cd-creator 4.0 You don't get the digitized

didn't work at all. It recognizes the cdr and starts playing
only no sound and vision.
Ok people i found some more
CD-R working on my 909. Samsung CDR SILVER 74" work so fine!!
I burn a VCD from the presentation VHS of my company at 4X and
did it work good. But i do more....i burn an hybrid VCD with
tracks for VCD/DVD player and info for PC like AVIs / PDF and

It can play VCDs on CD-R, burned at single
speed using NERO or ADAPTEC Easy CD-Creator 4.0. Don't try any
faster speed, because samsung will not accept the disc. I
tried ACER, NASHUA and no-name CD-R without any

Sorry But I have to say that my dvd 909 do

In both CD-Writers All the Princo's CDR-80 Disc, with Music or VCD play well on the DVD Player, when moving from one track to another sometines or generally the last tracks on the disc take about 3 o 5 maybe 10 seconds to access the track.
Other CD-R brands do not play (music) like Maxels, Sony, Pioneer, Basf, Verbatin, etc. All was created with Easy CD Creator, Tomorow I'll Test it with Nero 5.09.

then went into Nero and burned a VCD. The disc works find on
my computer, but not in the Sony player. I'll try the CD-RWs

Memorex did not CD-R. Smart-Friendly CDRW
work. Worked on cheap-o 'Office Depot' Brand CDR's (Green Back
74min CDR). Also Noticed Imation 1x-4x Green Backs don't work
too good, sometimes won't read the disk. But Imation 1x-8x
CDR's work good. Used Panasonic Encoder to create the video.

YES. My VCDs play just fine on my S550D. I'm using
cheap CompUSA 4x CD-Rs. I didn't have any luck with CompUSA

I've tried the GQ (Great Quality) CD-RW with
no success - get the No Disc message. The Memorex Platinum
CD-RWs work great.
Can read VCDs created on Princo
CD-R, Memorox CD-RW, CompUSA CD-R and CD-RWs. Tried on Imation
4X but no luck.
No cdr's work for music.I have tried
imation 8x discs for vcd and I get the no disc message. All
music cdr's show the no disc message.
Created a video
CD using a Great Quality (GQ) CD-R (green coating). The DVD
player could not detect the disc. No disc message appeared on
the screen. Tried a TDK CD-R with a blue coating to do the
same. Once again no disc message appeared. Finally used a
Memorex CD-RW (with a silver coating). It played just fine. I
think any CD-R or CD-RW with a silver coating should work finw
in this DVD player

This player will read all brands of RW disc VCDs
that I have tried (Memorex, Pacific Digital, BASF, TDK) but it
seems to display a better image on the Memorex and BASF (I
believe this is just due to the quality of the particular
discs, not the brand.) On the two Pacific Digital and one TDK
discs the image would repeatedly break up or the sound would
become unsync'd. These are probably just bad discs but I don't
know for sure. I get the feeling this player would read any
brand of RW. It will not read any CDRs because it does not
have the dual laser pickup. |

My Sony S7700 plays VCDs on CD-R perfectly (even on
those CompUSA CDs). It will not, however, play anything on
CD-RW - period! I have been able to get it to play SVCDs on
CD-R, but it will not show the correct trak time, nor are ANY
features (such as scan or even track selection) possible.
Therefore, I would definately NOT recommend THIS player for
SVCD. Also, only SVCDs that were made with CBR or CQ 65 (in
TMPEGEnc) would play without being trashed into noise after
the first few seconds. VCDs do play great though.
Burning CD following instructions on this site went
OK. Player recognizes "Video CD" when inserted . After hitting
"start" it does not play and shows after approx. 5 sec a code
both in the display and on the screen "C0013" i cannot find
anywhere in the manual what this means. According to your
compatibility list it should play VCD's perfectly. What went
wrong?? email [email protected]
In
contrast to the previous report I have had no problems playing
SVCD on this player. I'm using TPMGenc to encode and Nero 5.0
to burn onto Kodak Gold CD-R media. I can change chapter, use
CQ-VBR 100, rewind, fast forward, freeze frame. The only thing
that is wrong is the display on the player which shows track
duration to be twice the length it actually is, otherwise SVCD
seems to work fine. Perhaps there is a firmware issue with the
player itself and only later firmwares play

TDK and Imation, and Kodak CDRs (all 650MB media) did
not work with neither Nero5 nor Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4. No
burned audio cds worked on these media types either, but did
work on the Memorex 650MB and 700MB CDRs. Memorex 700MB CDRs
did not work with SVCD or VCD.
This is a single laser

I have gotten XVCD playback
working with CBR at speeds of 2500kbps and higher using
TMPGEnc and Nero. Additionally it will play VBR encoded mpeg1
streams as an XVCD at some decent bitrates, which increases
the picture quality to storage capacity ratio considerably.
Again, this was done using TMPGEnc and Nero. And as another
bonus, I have heard that this player will play both PAL and
NTSC encoded VCDs to an NTSC display with no trouble, but I
haven't tested to back this one up. CDRWs work great, and you
might as well use them, since they're not that expensive
anymore (if you buy them in quantity)... Plus, the select few
CDRs that do work with this player cost as much per disk as
cheapo CDRWs from buy.com. And on a sad note, although you can
clearly see the "SVCD" phosphors on the front panel, it chokes
on all SVCDS, even pressed ones. Too bad...
VCD Worked
with Memorex Platinum CD-RW.
This player is a bit
finicky - it would not play VCDs on Maxell or Imation CD-Rs
(blue backs) but I have had success with Acer CD-Rs and
CD-RWs. The bottom line - I assume that any CD-R or RW with a
highly reflective coating (silver or gold) will work! Will not
play with the following cd-r-brands maxell basf memorex
mitsumi.
Does not play SVCD at all :( Plays VCD
perfectly with Memorex CDRW media. Could not get it to play

Will play VCD's if burned on Princo CDR disks, all oothers

Unable to get player

Ricoh CDRW High Speed 10x. Player would recognize as VCD and

I have successfully tweaked my
Toshiba SD3109 DVD player into playing VCD's. All I had to do
was to take off the outside DVD player cover, remove the 5
screws holding down the DVD player to the chassis, remove the
DVD face plate from the DVD player, angle the DVD player up at
a 45 degree angle so I could get to the under side of it, then
I had to turn the POT (potentiometer) every so slightly
clockwise, which resides on a brown circuit board that is
attached with a white ribbon cable. Then BAM! I am now
enjoying VCD'S, DVD's and CD-Audio Disks!!! I have had
complete success with different brands of Silver/Green CDR's.
However, I have not Tried CDRW's yet but I heard that they
would work too. Email me with any

Many reviews claim 750 ( original, not 750s )can play
VCD on CD-R and CD-RW, but I've had nightmares trying to make
it work 100%. Having burnt with Nero, on a variety of media at
various speeds, all disks 'lose synch' or something, picture
freezes for a second and sound gets "warbly". Pausing the
player seems to re-synch it and will then play over parts
which previously 'stuttered', so it doesn't look like a
formatting/burning problem. A shame, because, when it's
working in the good bits, it's great and plays fine.
Used TMPGEnc mpeg-1 encoder and then burned to VCD and
S-VCD using Nero this gave playable results, other encoders
tried didn't (problems with audio, AV-3 issues). The spec for
the DVD-750 specifically excludes VCD and S-VCD and advises
you not to play CD-R and CD-RW media but the machine itself
actually recognises video CD by displaying the media type on
its led display. Strange hey but I'm not complaining. For a UK
Tesco outlet offer its good news all round. (£180 sterling)
Not tried SVCD but plays audio on CD-RW
I
haven't found a brand of CDR/CDRW media which doesnt play on
this excellent value for money machine. It played your SVCD
cif image without a hitch on a cheap unbranded CDRW. If I knew
how to produce a mini DVD I'd bet it would play that too.
This baby seems to play anything you put in it. And
yet over here in the UK it is sold as a "bargin basement"
machine!
It seems to work with all the media I've
tried including rather cheap looking media purchased in Italy
for under 20p (640 lire!) The player also plays images greater
than the VCD standard and up to full 720x576 as long as the
bit rate is less than 2000. The only snag i've had is that the
DVD begins |

better to buy an unknown brand. |

Couldn't test VCD on CDRW, but definitely no CD-R at
all !!! NO MP3!!! Superior video quality with DVD on RGB, but
not usable for 'home-made' things.
normal VCD
/including menu structure/ works with TDK CDRW and Adaptec
VideoCD Creator. (It plays audioCD written to TDK CDRW with
Easy-DC Creator, too!) Other brands and burners not tested,
yet. Couldn't test VCD on CD-R capability, but it probably
won't work, because can't play audioCD on CD-R
either. |

Only problems with FastForward by playing SVCD. SVCD
burned with Nero 5. I´m very happy about the Yamakawa 780.
Also it plays Mp3 (with subdirectory!) very well. I tested
various CD-R and CD-RW with no problems!
It can play
perfectly 720x576 SVCDs with high bitrate as high as the VOBs
which I extracted the MPEG-2 video samples from and converted
the AC-3 sound to MPEG audio 48 Khz 192 Kbits/sec and muxed
this with TMPEG 12a Encoder to a 720x576 high quality SVCD ! I
also encoded my own DV-AVIs in 720x576 25 frames/sec
progressive DV recording to MPEG-2 via TMPEG and it looks
almost as good as the priginal DV movies ! Great quality. I
also managed to get at least video to play when demuxing a VOB
to M2V video and AC3 and remuxing it back to SVCD. Mabye the
AC-3 multichannel sound comes now out of the digital output ?
( I don´t yet have a digital AC3 amp !) The video is playing
perfect, but the integrated AC3 to stereo converter is muted
during playback... Too bad miniDVD does not work... Maybe I
have to do a HEXEDIT of the Firmware to find a way to enable
miniDVD ? If somebody had the knowledge of the player
firmware, please compare it to the Afree firmware on the
www.robshot.com site and let me know, if you can adapt it to
the Yamakawa 780. Email me: [email protected] |

This player is bullshit ! bad picture- and tonequality
at DVD´s. mp3 is ok, but that´s all. It´s better, to go for
dinner with my wife for that money.
I think this Dvd
player is one of the best one. It costs 199 $ und can play
everything that is on any cdr. DVD - CD - CDI- VCD - SVCD -
MP3 everything. :-} And the best Landcodefree. You can update
the rom over the Internet. (Need a Burner) |

Hello, I am trying to figure out what type of C.D.s or
VCD's to but inorder to play them on my DVD player. I am not
sure if you have to have it hooked up a certian way or have
compatible parts, but we have another DVD player that burned
movies play in and my Zenith will not play them, it reads disc
error. If you woul dknow what type of vcd i need or how to set
it up please let me know. if you need any further information
