Afreey LD-2060 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD,miniDVD $200-300 Dolby 5.1 Great Player

How to to make this player code and macrovisionfree : http://www.dvdschmiede.d/ they are speaking about a sampo player but its equal to the afreey. for the english speaking folks: downgrade the player with version 2.0a hit play on the remote control upgrade it with version 3.3d for 560 hit play again burn the boot-cd/mav into mav directory now type setup and 38883 and enter bybass your player will be now mv and regionfree. spending 3 cdrs and you will have fun. This player sucks.....
Aiwa XD-DV370 Yes Yes MP3 $200-300 It works great with all cd-rs and cd-rws I've tried. No region is possible. I've piad only 555,- DM (german marks ;-)) ).

Works very well. Played all the VCD's I've tried so far. Its multi-region DVD as well. Cost me £169.

DVD mode:ok MP3 mode: SUCKS because: tracks are only accesable by the NEXT button (press this button 113 times to jear song 113) - STUPID Reads only the first Session of CDRs.. AudioCD mode: needs a least one second to respond to the number button of the RemoteControl No SVCD Support/No Macrovision OFF/ Overall: the player needs a lot of time to figure out what I have put into it ;-) Any comments: please mail to [email protected] playback on VCD on my first try (could be my settings), had to load disk and then power up holding the play button. played Imation 80-min CDRs. did go fast-forward and fast-backward. Still experimenting. Docs say it plays MP3s, has mode to pick tracks and even plays from subfolders. Anybody else tried this machine?
Aiwa XD-DV500 Yes ? This player was tested with gold disks written at 4x speed. It worked great until I tried a burn with a MPG file that was 24.50 minutes long. The other disks that worked were no more than 22 minutes long. The long disk worked inanother DVD player so it seems to be my player.
Aiwa XD-DW1 Portable Yes ? $600-700 Just got this portable Unit. It played my VCD's without a flaw. VCD's were created on Verbatim Datalife Plus Silver/blue Disks with Nero 5.0.
Alba DVD103 Yes No MP3,SVCD $100-200 I had a samsung 709 and was absolutely pissed off with it's lack of reading anything other than sirius discs. my brother who knows nothing about dvd by fluke bought this player from argus in the uk for 149 ukp. the picture isn't the best but it plays any cdr vcd and svcd and mp3 and you can navigate folders
Amitech DVD 700 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $300-400 Takes all my CD-R and CD-RW. Needs to switch to NTSC mode til play MP3's correct (annoying if you live in a PAL-world). Has a nice overview feature that shows 9 pictures of a single VCD movie and makes you jump to that part of the movie with a press on a button (1-9)... Had a few sync. problems but i think it's due to the fact that the original MPEGS were in weird format (not 100% vcd compliant)
Amoisonic DVD8156 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD Seems to work with every media. According to a couple of articles on the web it can play mp3 but so far I haven't had any luck. It is Multizone and removes the copy protection on DVD's.
Amoisonic DVD8506 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD,miniDVD $300-400 It support DOLBY DIGITAL, DTS, MPEG DVD format. Dolby digital Decoder with 5.1 analog aoutputs. It has also "on board" two intergraded games, TETRIS and Othelo
Amoisonic DVR2000 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD
Apex AD-500(a) Yes Yes SVCD,miniDVD $0-100 I don`t what the previous people are doing wrong, because I just bought the ad500a at circuit city for 99 dollars and it plays vcd and svcd on cdr just fine.I'm using imation and memorex discs.Picture quality is great, haven't got xvcd to work yet.

The 500A plays CD-Rs, the 500 without the suffix seemingly does not. Great player for $99, no reason to spend a dime more for doing VCDs or the amount of DVD movies most people watch. Digital output on the unit is by Coax only. Great player, I have yet to be able to get the unit to produce the skipping symptoms some people report, that may be a difference between the 500 and 500A though.

It play some CDR from Staples that lok silver on the buttom. From all copy's that i have and try on apex 600A half works on 500. $40Dollars does not worted all the hussle

Apex 500A I went to circuit city and tried to get them to let me test the display.. they wouldn't allow me to do anything. So I bought the 500A. I have the Apex 600, so I tried every CDR I already had burnt. It plays anything I threw at it Imation,PNY,Sony and the all popular $10 spindle. This player is awesome for the money. It doesnt play mp3s , but for $100 what do you expect? This is my an XMAS present for my sister by the way !

I tried using Memorex CD-R , it worked fine i tried touse Memorex CD-RW it said the tracks were identified but did not reproduce would try more brands Played Audio CD's branded and ones created at home both worked fine

This plays all, Don't be bitching about it, I used all kinds of cds' and i know for a fact that the no name 100 packs COMP-USA cds work excellent i swear they do. They kick ass. So buy it its good for you

OMG! I just paid $96.00 for this playe
Apex AD-600(A) Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $0-100 I got this DVD player at K-Mart on sale for $99.99! It was a steal!!!! Works great with a bunch of No-Name 80 min cd-r's i picked up at Staples. Using Nero 5.0, I've got great picture and great sound! Overall, I got an awesome price on a DVD player that will pay me back ten fold.

I've tested xvcds on the apex at 480x480 mpeg1 and 2000kbps woks great

This is a very forgiving player. It will play VCD's that were encoded at a non-standard bitrate: video-1244 kbps, audio-128 kbps. Video is better than standard VCD and audio is fine (burned with Nero 5.0).

IT also plays SVCD's you must have the FIRST firmware from what I can tell. It also plays MP3's as well and as everyone knows, the first firmware also lets you enter the diag menu to turn off protection and other shit :)

SVCD on CD-R but does not fastforeward or rewind.Works great with verbatum and Memorex cd-r. I tried Smart and friendly brand cd-rw and it also works great. I use Tmpgenc. It has templates for svcd, vcd 1150kbps,and vcd 1246kbps.I burn on Nero as it has a burning template for svcd. All just mentioned play fine on the Apex AD-600a

I bought a brand-new player today. Apparently the statement that only the first firmware plays SVCDs is incorrect. I used no-name CD-R, non-gold. Also, it would appear as if the MP3 gaps/skips are gone.

I used Sony CD-R & CD-RW worked well in VCD. SVCD worked but was glitchy starting & had to reload to restart. I used Nero 5.0 after reading these pages. I did use Nero to burn a slide show & it was excellent in VCD. Glitchy in SVCD. One thing you should know about the remote
Apex AD-660 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 Read reviews here and bought this player (mainly for SVCD) at Circuit City for $149. I couldn't be happier. Plays SVCD on CD-R and CD-RW with no problems (I'm really pleased with the quality). VCD and XVCD on CD-R and CD-RW with no problems. Beautiful picture. The manual needs some work, and the MP3 menus aren't very intuitive - but it works great. I'd highly recommend this drive. Cheap CD-R/CD-RWs work fine.

Bought this machine on what I read here took back the Samsung 611 for this machine and I love it. Plays Cheapie cdr, cdrw's NO PROBLEM. BUY THIS MACHINE. $129 after rebates at Circuit City. I watched Videos all bloody night.

No problems, other than a little slow to load CD-R/RW. My Tsunami-Nero SVCDs play and look great. Killer deal for $179 at CC.

Great player. Seems to be a AD-600(A) with out the bugs (and the secret menu). I use Office Depot, the cheapest I could find, brand CD-R and they work great. And for $150 via Circuit City, its a steal.
Apex AD-700 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 I have used this player with maxcell cd r and it works EXCELLENT! It plays almost all formats without a hitch, Although it does not have the "Secret Menu" I would highly recomend this player for the cost $350.00 canaian, and its compatability. only output it does not have is dolby 5.1
Apex AD-703 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 Seeking seems to work fine for DVD and There is an 8-character limit on MP3 filenames (effectively only 6-character after truncation when there are 2+ files with the same first 8-characters) When the unit is left on, quality degrades. (eg. color bleeding) The unit does NOT support song shuffling with MP3 CDs, nor does it support shuffling across audio CDs.

VCD's. But my homemade SVCD disks cause the movies to 'reset' to the beginninng when trying to seek. So far, I've only test SVCD's on CD-RW, trying almost all the various VBR encodings with TMPGenc in regards to this seeking problem.

This is a pretty cool player. It's a three disk dvd player, karaoke player, and plays all of the cdr/rw's (gold/green cdr from Fry's mostly)I have tried. I use tmpgenc(with english patch) and nero 5.0. I have made VCDs and SVCDs, both work----sweeeet!

I tried making a VCD with tmpgenc (with english patch) and Nero 5.0 using a PNY CDR. Didn't work at all. Video was extremely blocky and audio was all broken up. I then used a Radio Shack brand CDRW and it worked fine. From other posts it seems that many CDR/RWs work well, just don't bother with PNY brand CDRs. I paid $199 at American Electronics - great price for a 3 disk changer with all of the features, just wish it had a secret menu like the others to eliminate the video jitter on some store bought DVDs.

Does exactly what Apex claims without a hitch! At least what I have tested so far. Burned several SVCDs using TMPGEnc v12 w/English patch and Nero 5.x on TDK, Sony, and Imation CD-R and CD-RWs. No problem, playback was excellent (both video and audio). Used settings for TMPGEnc SVCD template found at http://www.geocities.com/bug2kbug/Helper/helper.htm. I followed auth
Apex AD-800(A) Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 Seems to work fine on the (normally fussy) Memorex 800MB CD's I have. Has a beautiful picture (progressive scan), built in 5.1 decoder, and can play HDCD natively. Now all I need to do is figure out how to build a 'patched firmware' that is region free - this unit can upgrade firmware directly from an appropriate CD!
Ariston DVD 2000 Yes Yes MP3.SVCD $100-200 Can be made region free thru service menu. Macrovision can be disabled thru service menu. Composite video output only. (scart or phono) Will play all sorts of brands of CDR & CDRW (Oct 2000) Just been discounted to £129 at Richer Sounds in the U.K. Probably Britain's cheapest DVD player. Mpeg & AC3 audio good, but regular CD audio dissapointing.
Atlantis Land DVD2000 Yes Yes MP3 $300-400 It work on all cd i tested (TDK, Princo, Imation)
Bush 2001 No Yes $200-300 Plays CDRWs perfectly. Does'nt like FFWD them when burned at anything more than 2x. Does'nt like CDRs at all.
Bush 2002 Yes Yes
Cyberhome ADM512 ? ? MP3 $200-300 Works great on mp3's. The price is 2.995,- NOK (Norway), guess it costs about $200 in the U.S.
Cyberhome ADN-212 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 Works OK for a basic chaeap DVD player Recommended for Camcorder Editors like myself with the ADS Pyro & Digital Video

No problems with off-standard SVCDs, even plays mpeg1 (multiplex for SVCD!) and mpeg 2 mixtures. See dvdboard.de.
Daewoo DHC-DHC2200K ? Yes MP3 $200-300 seems to be variously badged. (seen same deck as SC-2000)... plays mp3 off CD-R and CD-RW. Still downloading the SVCD image... I'll let you know!
Daewoo DHC2200K Yes Yes MP3,SVCD,miniDVD $200-300 Macrovision off, region change or free, 3Dsound, nice mp3 interface, read MP3tags and shown on TV, many options for video, sound, VERY GOOD DVD player. And of course good quality both sound and video; i love it !
Dantax DVD-450 Yes Yes All cd's and DVD's i have tried it has played and all CD-R and CD-RW's It also does a basic conversion from ntsc to pal and back. Only problem is that the drive is a little noisy, but apart from that it isan excellent machine. Also has a built in Dolby digital decoder. connect it up to active speaker for that wow home cinema sound. BTW no macrovision either
Denon DVD1500 Yes ? $400-500 Tried at 5 different fimes to create a SVCD, but it won't work.
Denon DVD3000 No Yes $600-700 Wont recognise SVCD (older firmware - early DVD player), like most major manufacturers DVD players it keys off the media type thus making Mini DVD unworkable. Most RW's even very cheap ones work well. Using a Dazzle DVC II for mpeg 1 encoding makes very good quality VCDs.
Denver JVD200 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 No problems with any of it!

Play all CDR Media..

Plays all kind of media that i've tested (all from noname cheap to expensive Kodak Golds), kickass player for a kickass price :P.. Sometimes not liking to play my Southpark dvd-rips though
Denver JVD210 Yes Yes
Denver JVD211 Yes Yes MP3 $200-300 Tried with cheap media, Kodak gold, Verbatim and the list goes on.It plays all of them. No region end no macrovision. COOL Player
Digitron DVS 360 Yes No MP3, SVCD $300-400 No problems at all with any CDR I have tried. Has lots of blocking on CDRW. Have used all types of Traxdata, Memorex, TDK, Kodak and Verbatim
DiViDo Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $300-400 It works with any kind of cdr-media (blue, green, gold...) It's a very good MP3 Player. It doesn't support WinAmp mpu files (or I don't know how to do it) I haven't tested with cd-rw but sure there's no problem. With VCD and SVCD there are problems with Fast Reverse, it always goes to the first track.

Works great !
DMW360 Sanyo Yes Yes

Enzer E-5051 Yes Yes MP3 Plays MP3. MP3 encoded with Audiocatalyst does not play properly. VCD tested on Samsung, Arita, Acer, Sony, Verbatim and Imation cdr's. They all seem to work fine. Svcd and CD-Rw not tested yet. It has support for SVCD according to the manual
Fisher S1000 Yes No $200-300 Despite other user reports, I have played CD-R VCDs in this player with no problem. The VCDs were made from .mpg files converted with Nero 5.0 . The brand of CD-R is RICOH Type 74/650MB with a gold top and greenish silver bottom.

This DVD player does not play ANY CDR's, whether you have audio or video on it. It can also playback all commercial VCDs.

this dvd player sucks and it can not play any burned vcd so fix the list it says it can play CD-RW's but it cant
Fisher S1500 Yes Yes $100-200 Works with all cdr's without a problem, even the cheap PNY's that won't play on playstation. This VCD player is awesome for the $$$. A friend of mine just bought it after buying an RCA, then Phillips that said they supported VCD's but wouldn't play them. He loves it, too
GE Digital GE1105P Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 Manual says it might erase cd-rs and to NOT use them, but i tried it and it played just fine =]

No CD-R that I've tried has worked, but each and every CD-RW has.

There is one cdr that worked great. Its a no-name shinny on top dull grennish blue bottom. Verbatim and Smart and Friendly CDRW wouldnt work. The would load but would stop playing after a few seconds.

I found a CompUSA brand that works great every time. It has no name but the product number is SKU #260896

Only brand I have found that played, with occasional skips, is an OLD HP CD/RW which was originally shipped with a 7110p CDRW drive. Tested unsuccessfully: Pacific Digital, Memorex, Yamaha CDRWs. All brands of CDR show 'no disc' on the player. Only tested with VCD 2.0

Compusa no name brand p/n 274612 worked flawlessly. no other cd-r media I have tried has worked. Also got it to work with Compusa 4x cdrw media, but picture would skip around a lot. :)

Ive tryed just about every kind of cd with only one working 100% of the time. Prime Peripherals CD-R 80 's

I tried it using Memorex CD-R's and CD-RW's. Converted some ASF to MPG (thanks to TMPEGEnc and Adaptec CD Creator 4.2) and both played fine. Going to try other brands in the future.

Player plays Star Wars Episode 1 just fine. When it starts to read it says VCD 2.0. But my Gone in 60 seconds says VCD 1.1 and says play when I push the play but I just get a black screen. I can't figure it out. If you can help gimmie a holler! - [email protected]

I tried it using Memorex CD-R's and CD-RW's. Converted some ASF to MPG (thanks to TMPEGEnc and Adaptec CD Creator 4.2) and both played fine. Going to try other brands in the future.
GE Digital GE1106 No No $100-200 I have tried every type of media and nothing works. I bought this unit at wal-mart hoping to get the 1105p unit but found an upgraded model. If anyone can get anything to play email [email protected]
GoVideo dvr5000 Yes Yes MP3 $300-400 Just got this player, Tried a few different CDRW VCD's no go. Does play VCD's on CDR ok. Decoding quality on VCD's are great. DVD's didn't look all that great though. A previous review says this player will copy DVD's. Not true, It stop the VCR when a copy protected DVD is played. Unless a hack was used!

It plays every kind of CDR and CDRW I've tried, which has been 6 different brands, gold, silver, red, green backs. It'll play MP3, and copies DVD to VHS (Skips the macrovision) Truly the best player I've seen. and I've had several.
GPX DV2000 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 I cant believe it. This thing cost $159 and it plays everything. I used maxell cdr for vcd and mp3. I used a samsung rw for the svcd. It also has karaoke(ill probably never use that though) and it has 2 video games(tetris/othello). I thought i would just try this "toy" for fun and return it if it didn't work. I'm keeping it now. The only problem I have is that I cannot find any more info on this vcr anywhere on the internet. Its like it doesn't exist. I think GPX just slaps its name on other companies stuff, anybody have any ideas who might really make this player??
Gradiente DVD-6500 Yes No $300-400 Actually worked consistently with just one out of 8 brands of CD-R that I tested. The one that worked is a "no-brand", white disc with the letters "SHU" in the middle.

Didn't work with Mitsui Gold cd-r 74 650mb

Only light green media cdr like Infomedia or without label, works in this DVD I think this light green media cdr is the cheapest of all
Grundig GDV 100 Yes ? $200-300
Grundig GDV 110d Yes ? Plays Video cd v.2. Hangs sometimes when fast forwarding! Video cd v.1 doesn't play right.
Harman Kardon dvd5 No Yes SVCD $700-800 The homepage tells it does not support cdr
Himage 9900 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD Plays MP3 and SVCD. Works with a variety of CD-R/RW
Hitachi DV-C605 No No $200-300 This new changer from Hitachi turned out to be a piece of sh*t. I got it as an upgrade for discontinued/suspended DV-P505U. It's huge (deep) and ugly unit, and does not play CD-R media or MP3. SUCKS!
Hitachi DV-K2 No No $300-400 Plays music Cd-R's , but only on the old GOLD type CD's.
Hitachi DV-P250 Yes Yes I've tried a SVCD made with Nero and it doesn't play. XVCD's are good ,very high bit rates. Seem to play 8x burned cdr's fine but doesn't like to fast forward them.
Hitachi DV-P250E Yes Yes $300-400 Plays both PAL and NTSC VideoCD. Any kind of CD-R and CD-RW are read. Reading problems/noises only with the Gold TRAXDATA CD.
Hitachi DV-P250U Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 Does not handle scratches on VCD of SVCD discs well. When you insert a SVCD it reports it is a SuperVCD on the screen. It plays SVCD. Player sometimes hangs on when you insert miniDVD, and it requires you to unplug the unit. It cannot play miniDVD

Plays SVCD. Tested using Verbatim CD-RW.
Hitachi DV-P300U Yes Yes This player will play anything...DVDs, VCDs, CD-Rs (Yes...copied VCD's), & CD-R/Ws...also has 4x Zoom
Hitachi DV-P303U Yes ? $100-200 Plays Mr. Platinum silver/green CDRs but would not play PNY silver/silver CDRs. Tested this one in the store.
Hitachi DV-P305U No No miniDVD $400-500 Checked several CD-Rs burned using Sony and Verbatim media and neither worked for Audio. I used Sonic Foundry CD Architect and Easy CD Creator for the burns. I tried a Pacific Digital CD-RW with audio burned with Nero 5 and it owrked fine. Tried a couple MP3 CD-Rs I had and none worked. I even tried burning some MP3s on that Pacific Digital CD-RW at ISO 9660, and it didn't work.

Tried several cdr types and didnt work at all. Neither with cdrw. IF you found a cd that can be played on it please email me

some blank nameless one´s work... only few, Kingtech cd´s work fully (atleast in audio), also Dataright cd´s work sometimes.
Hitachi DV-P505E Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300
Hitachi DV-P505U Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 Great player, plays just about any CDR and CDRW. Tried miniDVDs but unsuccessful. If anybody is successful please post it.

Contrary to this website's claim, this player DOES NOT play MP3. I have this player and it will not decode MP3. According to Hitachi, the DV-P505U does not have an MP3 decoder. Contact Hitachi at 1-800-448-2244.

(update from previous post) Plays MP3 using EasyCD Creator. Will not play CD-R or CD-RW created with Adaptec DirectCD. It plays multi-session CD-R and CD-RW discs in either ISO9660 or Joliet format. However when playing MP3s on a Joliet formated disc, the displayed filename will be abbreviated to 8.3 (ISO9660) format. Also Plays SVCD without problems.

Plays SVCD, XVCD, HVCD, MP3 (miniDVD not tested) Plated colour, nice remote, zoom 2x 4x, exclusive dual lens/laser, built in decoder AC-3 5.1 Composite, S-Video and RBG Out. Digest function for VCD (Creates a thumbnail mosaic to navigate through tracks). Upgradable firmware via CD (sent by Hitachi to Technical Service) I've used it for about 2 months and I'm very happy. I recommend it.

This machine has it all! works on everything ive tried, mp3, svcd, xvcd, vcd, dvd. I would recommend this player if you're serious about buy quality products that perform at a reasonable price. Also has 2x/4x zoom (neat little feature)

Great little unit. Played VCD at datarate of 2450, 3000 and 4000 with great image quality on CDRW Verbatim and Dysan. No miniDVD palyback

Tried Imation, Smart & Friendly, No Name blanks, CDR and CDRW, they all work perfectly! Paid $229 for this player, worth every cent! Highly recommended player!

JVC XV-511 Yes Yes Plays anything you put in it on any brand of cd-r/cd-rw

Ok, in your chart it says that this player will play anything you put in it but this has been false with my experiences so far. I have tried Imation and Memorex CD-Rs, audio and SVCD and the player won't recognize there is even a disc in it. If you could give me a brand of CD-R to use that would be extremely helpful. [email protected]
JVC XV-511BK No No $200-300 No CD-Rs no CD-RWs. VCD compatible but not burnt ones.
JVC XV-512BK Yes ? $200-300 I just bought this DVD player today and I have to say it was worth the money. I have tried acer, maxell, memorex and some other no name brands and they all played flawlessly on my 21" Sony TV
JVC XV-515 No No I HAVE TRIED WITH SEVERAL CDS PRINCO/MAXWELL/ARITA BUT THEY DONT WORK ON THIS DVD PLAYER
JVC XV-515GD Yes No? CD-R's DO work on these player. I have not tested CD-RW's, as I don't use them. I've tried it with Compusa blues and Memorex 80 min, and Maxell CD-R's and they've worked fine. Whoever sent in the results before must of been using cheap discs.
JVC XV-521BK Yes Yes $200-300 Works with ALL media.

I own a JVC XV-521BK and I'm very surprised it does not read SVCD on CD-R ! (I tried the NERO_SVCD.NRG test image found on the excellent http://www.planete-numerique.com/Pages/Svcd/Svcdtest.htm on SONY and TARGA CD-R) It is the same hardware as the JVC XV-523GD. The only difference is the case (Gold instead of Black). So what's the problem ? If anybody knows more, don't hesitate to contact me for further testing. --- [email protected]

After consulting JVC Web site, I doubt about the line JVC XV-523GD. Are you sure of this support ? JVC reports that this player reads DVD Video, CD CD-R/RW and Video CD. Nothing about SVCD. Could you give me the E-mail of the person who made the test so we can run the same tests ? Thanks, --- [email protected]
JVC XV-523GD Yes Yes $200-300 Excellent player for DVD and VCD. Will not play MP3s.

weet machine, plays almost anything you throw in there, except mp3's. I think, I've tested it out in 3 different mp3 fashions, none of them work, but I guess I could be screwing it up. Verbatim, Verbatim, Verbatim. Best disk on the planet, bar none.

THIS PLAYER IS MADE TO READ CDR AND CDRW'S NO PROBLEM AT ALL WITH ANY DISC

Tried to play SVCD on different media with no luck. Clock counts off when playing track but no video or sound.
JVC XV-525BK Yes Yes This player is great for VCDs burnt on anykind of media...It is an exact copy of the xv-523gd, just black in color...The only downside is that there seems to be an incompatiblity issue with playing SVCDs i.e. the counter shows playback, but there is no audio/video what-so-ever...bummer...All SVCDs were created using TMPgenc beta 12 and burnt using Nero 5.0...
JVC XV-D2000 No Yes Used cheapo CompUSA CD-RWs for VCDs and it worked great. No go on any CD-Rs, however.
JVC XV-D421 No Yes Does play Audio on CDR, says it will play VCD's and will support CDR and CD-RW. Have tried CDR 80 min and 74 min disks with no luck with vcd only audio. Have tried CD-RW (Memorex) Platinum and has that worked like a charm.....
JVC XV-D501BK No Yes
JVC XV-D701 Yes Yes $300-400 Generic (VCD) CDRs work fine with this DVD player. It takes a few tries for it to work (opening and closing the disc tray).

CD-R VCDs do *not* play whatsoever in the JVC XV-D701. Any CD-RW Format Disc works
JVC XV-M555BK No Yes $200-300 I have tried all types of media, burners, proggies, etc to no avail. I was told the damn thing played MP3's, I wanna throw it through a window

Works with COMPUSA CD/RWs. Perhaps is limited to 1X, 2X, 4X style CD/RWs. I have tried 8X, 12x without success.

I tried Sony CDQ-74BN and Imation Blue 1x-8x CD-Rs with no luck. I have read that others have been unsuccessful as well.
JVC XV-M567GD No No $200-300 PNY, Acer, TDK, and about 3 others wouldn't work, 80 minute or 74. Used NERO to burn. All of the movies i tried worked on two others players I tried them on. It says in the maual it won't play CD-R media.

Would not play Mr. Platinum silver/green CDRs or PNY silver/silver CDRs. Tested this one in the store.
JVC XZ-511BK No No Does not play Audio nor Video on CDR/CDRW that I have tested
Kendo something Yes ? MP3 $200-300 The first series had problems with regular CDDA cd´s but thats fixed now. It plays mp3 well but doesn´t use the ID3 tag. DVD quality is very nice sound too. Tried very cheap cdr´s and they worked fine... But i think i would go for a Pioneer, If you want to pay what they cost and dont need to play MP3´s
Kenwood DVF 5010 No Yes SVCD $200-300 Superb quality dvd player, but have problem with cd-r (no support also for audio), but cd-rw from traxdata are ok (4x), and also Verbatim (4x). I suppose that is important the software for vcd I use nero and all is working.

SVCD Works fine on CD-RW but not on CD-R. I have tested with the test SVCD cif-image from vcdhelp and a home made one using NERO. Both 480x480 NTSC and 480x576 PAL works fine.
Kenwood DVF 7010 No Yes I tried the traxdata and verbatim CDRW 4X both work
Kioto 2001MP Yes ? MP3 $200-300 I tested Sony, Maxell and Verbatim CDRs and an unbranded one, without flaws, considering that they arent of the same quality available in the US. I tested a Zone 1 movie, without problems (my player is zone 4), and Macrovision is disabled (at least in my player, I tested it copying a Matrix DVD on my Sony VHS, and the result is clear).
Kioto DVD-2001 MP Yes No MP3 $200-300 Great player, it doesn't support CD-RW so I haven't tested all the posibilities but it plays fine the standard formats. I need some help trying to disable macrovision. great player, great price, great performance!

KLH DVD221 No Yes SVCD $0-100 Cost $99 at Bestbuy. For some reason play reads CDRW but not CDR(?). I have tryed Imation CDR, CompUSA CDR, no Brand CDR, no go. CDRW tried is Imation CDRW and no Brand CDRW.
Kones DVD-3000 No Yes MP3 Plays MP3s
Konka KD-1800U Yes Yes SVCD $100-200 I have tried using memorex and no-name cdr's and both work very well,I thought this DVD player would not play my vcd's but dam i love it now!I would recomend this to anyone who can't afford a higher end DVD player,it has dolby digital and dts support,it plays DVD,VCD,SVCD,music CD I have read the online comments on the DVD player and they are true,it is one very good deal for a low price DVD player! If anyone out there owns one I think you would agree with me!

I noticed your current info for the KD1800U says it doesn't play CDRW media. For what its worth, my Konka KD-1800U plays both CDR and CDRW media using TMPGENC and NERO.

This is one helluva good dvd player for the money. I got mine for $179 and it plays VCD and SVCD on any brand of cd-r. It doesn't play cd-rw but that is not a big drawback. It plays even the cheapest brands of cd's I have tried.

Has played everything I've thrown at it so far. Sensitive to fingerprints on media, but a great player.
Labway Xwave 900 Yes ? SVCD $200-300 Plays SVCD on CD-R after loading many times. Don't know if this is only my problem or an non-compliant SVCD format. It always recognizes the SuperVCD. I burn with Nero so maybe it works better with I-author

Also it's codefree. Have not tested miniDVD yet. It has two mic. line-ins as well, so dust off your CD+G collection and sing like Ricky Martin :-) Furthermore has it a build in Dolby Digital Decoder and DTS digital out. Scart out, S-video out, digital-optical out. Only thing missing is updateable firm/ROM and support for MS mpeg-4 (DivX) but can't have it all for only 1995DKr ~500DM ~245$.
Luxman DVD470 Yes No $400-500 Works only with lighter colered CDRs. Dark colered CDRs like silverblue and green will not work. Brands which I have tested to work ok include Mr. Platinum and Prenco (not the colered ones). I have only tried one CDRW, and that did not work.
MAJESTIC d-2000A Yes ? MP3,SVCD $200-300 I TRIED WITH THE WORST MEDIA, THE UNBRANDED- LIKE PRINCO- AND IT WORKED FINE SO I THINK ANY OTHER WILL RUN. THE CHAPTERS MENU FOR DVD IS EXCELLENT, I HAVEN´T SEEN A DVD PLAYER WITH SOUND AND MOTION ON MENU LIKE THIS... AND THE BEST THING IS THE MULTIREGION CAPACITY AND IT PLAYS PAL AND NTSC, ISN'T ENOUGH TO CONSIDER AS A GOOD OPTION?

Memorex MVD-2025 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 I have tried Imation CDs, and all sorts of cheap CDs, and this DVD player worked 100% perfect in every aspect. It does not hang for an extended period like you said above. As soon as I stick the CD in, it just starts playing right away with no problems. It is well worth the price.

Plays XVCD burnt on Maxell CDR's

Plays VCD's burned on just about any cdr media I tried. Everything from cheapy HiVal's and MegaData's to more expensive HP's, Art Media, Imation, etc.. Memorex seem to work the best though.(gee I wonder why?) Any copied disc, VCD or music will pause for an extended period of time when you insert it.. but it WILL play.. just give it a bit. the more you use the less time it takes to load them.. DOES NOT play mp3's, never tried SVCD, XVCD, or MiniDVD..

It also plays SVCD with TDK and Maxell
,memorex, Cursor, and Gigabyte CDs used for VCD. All worked fine. Used Cursor cds for testing the SVCD. Worked fine. Haven't tried CDRW media. Does not play mp3s
Memorex MVD-2026 Yes ? $100-200 This memorex DVD player kicks ass. It plays every CD-R that I put in there. Even the cheap 50 CDS for 10 dollars they sell at Fry's Electronics. Anyways, this is best deal i've seen only 150 bucks at Target.

Mitsui 650 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300
Monyka 8200 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 Plays SVCD, XVCD and MP3. It blips when playing MP3 >128bps.

I´ve burn a movie on 2 cd´s. It works great on my PC but when i put cd1 in my standalone Monyka 8200 it will only play the first 5 minutes then it stops. Then on Cd 2 it does the same thing but it stops on 4,5 minutes. I used VCD cd creator in Easy cd 4.0. Maybe i need to upgrade my player , but i dont know how to do (i know it can be done). Their homepage really SUCKS. I would be very greatful if you could help me. THANX [email protected]
Mustek DVD-V300 Yes Yes MP3 $200-300 This machine is excellent. Mustek can play DVD (region free), VCD, SVCD and single CD with any type of cdr media. The best one of this machine is at Mp3.At the tv screen you can see the directories of the cd and the names of the songs. At vcd you don't have problems.Mustek can play excellent all vcds. If you want a cheap machine (only $285) Mustek is the solution

Works well with all media that I tried so far, from the worst cd-r's to the best ones. haven't tried svcd nor non-standard vcd's, but the lealet says that it can read svcd's...
NAD T-550 Yes Yes $500-600 Well - the player does NOT play back all CDR/CDRW's on the market. I have tested a wide range of media and so far I found the following to work: Traxdata CDRW (Silver)= works very well. (Try to burn at 1x-speed for best result) Fujifilm CDRW= works very well. (Try to burn at 1x-speed for best result) Traxdata CDR (Silver)= works.. but not very reliabel. The player at time has difficults reading the media.. (Try to burn at 1x-speed for best result) To be able to fast forward/rewind, pause and "program" a starting point - you have to insert sequence headers in every GOP! Like required for the Phillips DVD-players!
Napa DAV309 (VCD player) Yes Yes MP3 $100-200 I don't know what type of SVCD's are supposed to play, but the image from here didn't play on the player, however, I know it works, because it plays fine on my Pioneer 525 DVD Player. Maybe a smaller resolution will work? let me know.

This unit play most on the shelf cdr and cdrw and is " portable ". Light weight ,with remote control.

This is portable VCD player. This player also play mp3 cd too.
Neufunk DT-2000 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 Works with absolutely EVERYTHING !!! I tried Maxells, Fujifilm, Lead Data, BASF, even brandless cds they ALL work !! Plays MP3z without a problem, plays vcds without any problem and the shop assisstant even gave me an address where you can download region free patches, firmware upgrades, ... It really is the best and it claims to be the same as a Raiter or Toika DVD player. Oh, and it looks quite classy too :-)
Nintaus n9901 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD Plays MP3 (no on-screen display), VCD, and SVCD. On CD-R and CD-RW. Extreme testing on SVCD, using LSX codec. Also Photo CD, but cannot show more that 99 pics. [email protected]
Olidata 1999-E Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 Great player,it plays everything!! : dvd,xvcd,svcd,mp3.It also plays Svcd made with 352*288 resolution and a bitrate of 4.0 mbits!!! Unbelievable! I could fit about 50 minutes of video with an execellent quality. Plays almost every brand of media.Region free and macrovision free. Highly recommended!!
Omni 2002 Yes No MP3 $300-400
Omni SL-P2000KD Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $300-400 Popular low-end DVD player that is sold in Australia. Very cheap ($329 AU) Chinese-made player that plays nearly everything you put in it. MP3 ability also has on-screen display. Good picture quality, but menu has a couple bugs and there are a lot faulty units out there.
Orion DVD 2000 No No $200-300 Wont even play original VCD's as I have tested it with my entire collection, any one know if it is possible or even how to get it to play them.

Will play standard Audio Cd's on any make and brand of CDr
Oritron DVD100 Yes Yes $100-200 Indicates bad or no disc when CD-R or CD-RW is inserted. Even a copy of a music CD will not play when the original will. The copy plays on a music CD player. The CD-R media was Imation and the CD-RW media was Princo. Read BELOW ALSO.
,menu: insert music cd, press stop, press menu, press #9, press1-all (repeat), press open a new menu comes on to turn on vcd player

Does not work with Imation media of any sort (cdr nor cdrw), Works perfectly with other media, however.. I've succesfully used memorex cdrw's in this as well as prime perepherials 8x 80minute cdr's Also, my unit was made in late 99 and seems to have different firmware.. to activate vcd playback I had to put a disc in, press stop, menu, 9, open cd, 1-all, 1-all, open cd again, then it will pop up a menu asking if you want to enable vcd support, press 1.. if it opens the cd tray, you did it wrong.

im having a problem accessing the region menu i followed the steps provided above and it still doesnt work i need help alot of my vcdz are appearing black and white because of this ..pleese help me outi have also posted this topic in the encoding forum as well as the burning forum - [email protected]

I need some help BAD!! Got this sucker up and moving but no matter what I do, it keeps giving me no or bad disc error. Unfortunately, I cannot find the owner's manual, so I'm scrambling around for help. [email protected]

The hidden menu notes don't work on my new machine (10/00) so I can't enable VCD on this player. Looking for a correct menu entry to enable it. [email protected]
Oritron DVD200 Yes Yes SVCD $100-200 More features are available after removing macrovision from the menu. To remove macrovision, first you have "no disc" in the system. Then press menu, then 2, then open, then 0, then 0, and finally

You must enable VCD play capability through hidden menu. Plays Memorex Platinum CDRW great! Have had no problems. Does not read Imation or Sony CDR. VCD menu: insert music cd, press [stop], press [menu], press [9], press [1-all], press [open] a new menu comes on to turn on vcd player. Region menu: start with "no disk", press [menu], press [open], press [5] a menu asks you to choose a region 1-6, press [mute] and the word ALL will appear.

There is an error on this part of the PLayer's INformation: Region menu: start with "no disk", press [menu], press [open], press [5] a menu asks you to choose a region 1-6, press [mute] and the word ALL will appear. It Should be: Region menu: Turn on the player with no disc in the tray Press menu Press 9 Press open Press 5 Press mute Press OK Press exit
Oritron DVD600 No Yes SVCD $100-200 Spoke to Oritron Rep., gave me instructions on setting up the newer models. CompUSA cheap CDR's do not work. CompUSA CDRWs work great burning with Nero. First, place a music CD in the DVD drawer and close: When the CD is playing, use the remote control to: press [STOP] press [MENU] press [1] press [INDEX] press [OPEN] (open/close drawer) You will now see a new menu option on your TV.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If this does not work (depends on software version) then use this sequence: First, place a music CD in the DVD drawer and close: When the CD is playing, use the remote control to: press [STOP] press [MENU] press [9] press [INDEX] press [OPEN] (open/close drawer) You will now see a new menu option on your TV

Needs remote hacks for VCD and multi-region (same as DVD100/DVD200). Will auto-convert PAL VCD to NTSC, though you need to stop and resume-play a couple of times. Won't work on CD-Rs (though only tested 2x Imation media). Does work on CD-RWs though.

Burned on CompUSA cheap CD's using Nero. No luck.
Panasonic A100 No Yes Works with Smart & Friendly CDRWs but it does hang a little on identifying that there is a disc in the drive. Haven't tried other CDRWs yet.

plays most cdrws i think. cheap compusa cds work, as do memorex....
Panasonic A105 No Yes $200-300 Plays XVCD ( 2Mbit/sec, MPEG1) on GQ brand CD-RW. I used Nero 5.0. SVCD won't play right (due to extra user data??).

I have only gotten Office Depot CD-RWs to work. I am only doing VCD format not DVD. And working with Walkman type VCD players I can only get Office Depot CD-Rs to work in them.

Will not play on CD-R discs > plays CD-RW discs only
Panasonic A110 No Yes SVCD $200-300 The Panasonic A110 DVD Player would only PLAY the vcd when encoded at a 25fps. The audio was not playing with the setting to stereo, so I changed it to dual channel and this works. I used the TMPEnc encoder in my experimenting. SVCD was not even possible for me to attempt and most likely won't work with what I came across with Adaptec. Whenenver I encoded a file as mpeg-2, when adding the file to adaptec, it alarmed with detailed errors of what settings it stated would not be playable in a vcd or dvd player. Being stubborn, I burned the cd anyway and tried to play it, no such luck. I was able to manage to get rid of all the alarms with the exception of system clocking error. After much experimenting with the settings, I changed the system information to reflect MPEG-1 VCD. I was good to go after that, adaptec did not respond to me with any other unacceptable errors that would cause it not to be playable. I was then able to play the vcd with this setting along with the 1st paragraph that was specific to the Panasonic DVD player I think. As far as MP3's, it has worked in the past. Can't think for the life of me which media and settings I used for it to work.

Plays SVCD. Plays all brands of CD-RW. SONY CD-RW, Imitation CD-RW...

Likes most CDRW media. Plays XVCD just fine, above 2600 peaks seems to be no prob for XVCD or SVCD. One more thing - have not tried > 352 x 240 XVCDs, but no problem with VBR XVCDs. One more thing - have not tried > 352 x 240 XVCDs, but no problem with VBR XVCDs.
Panasonic A112 No Yes $200-300 Worked with Memorex CDRW platinum Nero burn 4x but hangs with SVCD CDRW. Cannot read Memorex CDR or el cheapo "GQ" CDRW.

It didn't work on 74 min CompUSA CDRW. Does anyone else has better luck with this machine?
Panasonic A115 No Yes $200-300 Fuji Film cd-rw's don't work, only one I seem to have gotten to work is Memorex 74 min CD-RW. This player is really pissing me off, anyone else have other RW's to work?

This player works fine with smart and friendly cdrw always. Imation cdrw works but have some freeze.
Panasonic A120 No Yes $100-200 Suprisingly it plays the Cheap CompUSA CDRW media (4x).. Tis a shame it does not work with the CD-R media (of any brand: Sony, Memorix, TDK, Verbatium, and Maxell). You have to power off the unit and turn it on with the media in it. Once you play the first one, you can swap disks with ease.

I have a Panasonic A120 that plays VCDs burnt on Memorex CDRWs.. never had one fail yet. I have used cheaper CDRWs and they didn't work But burning with EZ CD CReator 4.0 and The Memorex have always been good so far!

Have tryed an Acer CD-RW on and Acer 4x-4x-32x and it worked with choppy results. Video kept pausing and the video showed up in blocks after it came back. Haven't tried VCD's with other CD-RW's but music works on a DISC CD-RW. Music is also choppy and skips.

Got some Memorex CDRW platinums and worked very well. Only problem is that I burned it with Nero 5 2, after about 20 minutes into the VCD it begins to slow down somewhat, however making chapters stops this from happening made a couple of music videos from muchmusic then put them on vcd and it turned out excellent. Used only memorex cdrw.

Works very well with Memorex Platinum Cd-Rw. Doesn't work with Samsung Cd-rw. It doesn't play Cd-r.

Created a VCD on Memorex Platinum CD-RW using Easy CD Creator 3.5c--works great. Haven't verified if CD-RW other than Memorex work.
Panasonic A1250EC No ? Pplays only silver CDR (i've tested many cdrs, but only FUJI silver CDR and PRINCO silver CDR it plays) doesn't play blue CDRs. I don't know nothing about CDRW. Support for VCD2.0. I don't check because only small percent of CDRs it reads, but IT PLAYS VCDs on CDR (FUJI
Panasonic A130 No ? $300-400
Panasonic A160(EB) No Yes $300-400 It didn´t read any vcd to now. I try tith cdr: black cde, samsung 80 min cdr, crappy blue cdr, hp, imation, maxwell, tdk, dysan and didn´t work. CDRW works fine.

I can play CDRW vcd but it lags all the time and some times it stops total. I use HP CDRW.

Worked perfectly even though manual says no CD-R/RW * Disc - Ricoh CD-RW 74R (Speed 1x2x4x) 'sliver' discs [http://www.ricoh.co.jp/cd-r/e-/e_europe/media/index.html] * Burner - Ricoh MP9060A-DP 6x4x24x&4x CD-R/RW&DVD-ROM drive * Software - AHEAD nero BURNING ROM v5.0

CD-RW labeled by Pearl (www.pearl.de) works fine and all the time.
Panasonic A300 No Yes The Zone 1 version of the Panasonic A300 player plays VCDs on Ritek CD-RW. However, the Japanese version of the player doesn't. Don't know why.

I have found that Memorex platinum CDRW works with my old DVD player. I havnt found any CDR media to work yet.
Panasonic A310 Yes Yes $300-400 Can be fussy when it's cold or dust on disc but otherwise plays VCDs no problem. I use Maxell CDRs.

It works best with Memorex
Panasonic A320 No Yes Works great with any CD-RW discs I've tried
Panasonic A350 No Yes SVCD Plays SVCD. Plays all CDRW disc brands

Absolutely no luck with CD-Rs (tried about everything), extremly limited luck with CD-RW (got it to recognize one SVCD CD-RW once, but didn't play properly. Never got it to recognize the same disc again. Go figure). Tried several brands of CD-R and CD-RW, with different CD writers. Apparently, the unit is equipped with a extremly picky single-beam pickup (it's definitvly a problem of reading the disk, not a mastering issue).
Panasonic A360 No Yes Plays VCD on CD-RW. Is necesary switch off and switch on the player with the CD-RW inside.

I have tried it with different types of cdr philips / maxell .. and one cdrw (I looked at your list and saw that this could work)they don't work. I am really frustrated.. !! I have a region 2 DVD (netherlands) If you could advise me how I can burn my own CD's and how to play them on this !@!@!@! machine, I would be very thankfull.
Panasonic C220 No Yes $300-400 Does not read any CDR/CDRW I've tried. Plays VCDs just fine. My suggestion, get the Pioneer DVC302, DVC503, or Apex 703.

Overall, this player sucks. Menu system is not very user-friendly. Can't play music on CDR or CDRW; can't play VCDs on CDR or CDRW. For karaoke purposes, the only useful feature is the 5 disc changer.

Plays orginal VCD's just fine. I will be trying a cdrw later on and will update. Does not play cdr's at all...
,memorex CD-RW Platnum work fine Office Depot CD-RWs work most of the time
Panasonic CV50 No No $300-400 Can't get the thing to play any VCD's I make. Tried FUJI, Maxell, Sony, Taiyoyuden, and Imation. Nothing. Tried Nero, Adaptec, and VCDImagerGUI. If anyone has any ideas about this player please post it!

This dvd player does not works with maxell cd-r 80 XL discs(gold/blue), maxell 74 min (gold/light green) and also doesn't work on memorex 74 min CD-R (silver/green)

Works pretty good with Mr. Platinum silver/green CDrs but I have to turn it off/on a couple of times to get them it to recognize them. Does not work with PNY silver/silver CDRs from Best Buy at all. This is a 5 disc changer. I have not tried any other type of media.
Panasonic DV30 No ? Tried several cd-r in the store, none came up even as disks. Buyer beware, as it has a YES,YES at this point
Panasonic K510 No Yes $400-500 Cannot read CD-R(silver/blue, silver/silver). VCD burnt(4x)on Kingston CD-RW works great.

Panasonic L50 Yes No $600-700 Works with VCDs created with Adaptec Easy CD Creator. Used ordinary Compusa Generic CDRs.

Plays XVCD. All CD-RWs that I tested doesn't work
Panasonic LV75 Yes No SVCD $800-900 Memorex Gold. Sometimes needs to be fooled by adding a short track (a couple of seconds)to the beginning of the SVCD from a recording which created a usuable SVCD previously. Reason unknown but not necessary 95% of the time.

Ii bought this in the uk, the retail price was 1200 pounds, i got a good deal and also got it chipped to play all regions. It plays all cdr although the instructions says that it wont, it also plays vcd.
Panasonic P10 Yes No $600-700 ALL CDR WORKS FINE, I have tested many CDRW brand, do not works at all.
Panasonic RV-65 ? ? $400-500
Panasonic RV20 Yes ? $200-300 I have only found one CDR media it works with at all and that is Sirius.

It will play CD-Rs... pretty much all kinds... but it ussually takes 2 or 3 tries to get it to play
Panasonic RV30 Yes Yes $200-300 Imation cd's work great

Cdr that don' works: 1) Maxell 2) Kodak Gold 3) TDK Cdrw that works: 1) Pacific Digital 2) Maxell 3) Imation

I tried Gold Silver & blue discs and the unit wouldn't read any of them.

Heres are list of cdr/cdrw I've tried, not much but it might help... CDRW: HP, Samsung CDR: Only tried memorex and it wouldn't play.
Used DISC brand cdrw's and they seem to work fine. No luck with maxell cdr's
Panasonic RV60 No ? $400-500
Panasonic SCHT80 No Yes $500-600 I have only found one CDR media it works with at all and that is Sirius.
Panasonic T-2000 No Yes Plays VCD's encoded with Nero 5.0 or EZ-CD creator. I've had zero success with CDR media. But Memorex CDRW Platnum media always work. This deck will not play SVCD or XVCD
Panasonic X410 No ? $200-300
Philips DVD700 Yes Yes $200-300 This player works fine on all VCDs I created (cheap brand CDR/CDRW). Unfortunately it does not show time in the display while playing VCD so finding a scene can be difficult, but for this price I think it is a nice buy.
Philips DVD701(AT) Yes Yes SVCD $100-200 I tested my philips with a own created SVCD video and it works very good, nice quality

Played all CR-R-media I tested, blue, green, gold, plays also VideoCD on CDR. The drive itself is a little bit noisy, but besides that a great player. I miss the S-VHS-output, the connector on the scart-Interface is not contacted.

Using cheapo Compusa cd-r & cdrw and they all work fine. VCD & Audio burns.Bought at Circuit City for 179 plus tax.Don't know of any loopholes(anyone?).Have a Kenwood A/V amp having a problem running in the digital mode, although the surround sound works. All in All a good buy!

Will not play original VCD's in PAL format. Purchased it because box said it played DVD,VCD,CD-R,CD-RW. Called customer service line and talked to technician who verified that will only play NTSC format.

Philips DVD710 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 Have tested my player with XVCD with the following parameter: MPEG1 CBR 480x576 25fps with 1600 kb/s and 224 kb/s audio. This combination works great will try to push videodatarate higher. Very good quality Software: Nero 5.x + TMPEG

The player works with XVCD 480x576 PAL 25fps and a videorate of 2524 kbit/s. The quality of the video is very good. One point seems to be very important, that is you have to demultiplex and that multiplex the MPEG stream with TMPEG as VideoCD no standard, otherwise you will only get Video with totaly broken audio. If you use the Panasonic MPEG encoder don't forget to insert the missing GOP header.

About the ff/rew issue: After updating my player's firmware to v9.23 I was happy to find it forwarding/rewinding NTSC VCDs without a glitch! I haven't tried PAL yet, but I suppose the v9.23 firmware ff/rews those VCDs as well. This may even apply to other Philips DVD players as well because the update is made for a whole bunch of models. Look in newsgroups for info on updating your player's firmware.

SVCD only when in region 1 mode

Philips DVD711 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 It works with every media I put in, even the cheapest CDRs, but can get it to play SVCD. XVCD doesn't work also.

Plays VCD's on Verbatim CDR, PNY CDR, Memorex CD-RW Platinum, Memorex CDR, Imitation CDR. Haven't tried a SVCD yet.

In English: It plays VCDs on CDR or CDRW fluently on any type of cd. I bought it on last week, price was 61600HUF+tax. In Hungarian: Lejátszik bármilyen típusú VCDt, bármilyen alapanyagon. Magyar gyártmány, a múlt héten vettem 61600.-+áfáért.

Plays svcd. this player plays cdr vcds..etc without flaws! used compusa and tera media discs (you can see right through them) and they record and play perfect on this machine. ripped many dvds and using nero.

This player is really messed up man. I've only used one certain type of media but sometimes it plays vcds in black and white. Sometimes fine, sometimes black and white. I've been using Imiation 80 min Blue Backs.

I created my first VCD and had absolutely no problems with this DVD Player. Tested with Prime Peripherals 80 Min/700 MB CD-R and Adaptec EZCD.

This player has played any media I have thrown at it - from expensive CD-RWs to very cheap CD-Rs.

THIS PLAYER WILL PLAY DVDS (ALLREGS) CDRS (ALLTYPES ) CD-RW (ALLTYPES EVEN THE CHEAP SHIT ONES) EVERY SINGLE DISK I HAVE TESTED WORKS OK (MOST PROBS IS THE WAY VCDS ARE WRIGHTEN EVEN THE ONES THAT DIDNT PLAY PROPERLEY RIPPED OFF DISK AND RE BURNED ON SAME MEDIA WORKED OK !!!!! THIS PLAY IS MULITYREGION (AND NOT MODIFED!!!!!!!!)

Burned at different speeds 1x,2x,4x with nero. Problem was vertical hold would not stay, screen just kept rolling, no way to adjust. Tried cdr%2

Philips DVD751 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 Whoever said this one plays Mini-DVD was on crack, or should spill with the method the disc was burnt. No luck here....

Plays cd-r on sony (bluebottom) cd-r's and crappy comp-usa cd-r disks. Tried TDK (blue bottom) disks it would pause then stop and wouldn't play. Used EZ-Cd Creator worked perfectly for all the cd-r's I have tested except TDK and Vertibatim. Cd-rw's never tested yet. Memorex cd-r's work fine, also. Vertibatim cd-r's didn't work at all. Tryed using nero to burn, but wouldn't play on the DVD, only on my vcd player.

Have tried all media crapy and high quality, they all work this DVD accepts dvd, vcd, svcd, music cds (copies, home burned) who ever wrote the message before was either using imprpoer settings or just had no luck.. but this DVD works great with all copies....Please Update the info.

I've tested it on cd-r, cd-rw SAMSUNG and it worked very good. SVCD I've tested with downloaded 'cifimage' burned with EasyCd, and also own SVCD burned with NERO 5.x

Philips DVD815(AT) ? Yes $100-200 I used silver, gold, and platium CD-R media in HP and Cendyne burners with no success. In addition to vcd's it will not even play Audio CD-R.

Seems to play most VCDs some times the sound doesnt work .. other times it works perfectly.

Philips DVD930 Yes Yes Reads audio cd-r and cd-rw. Tested with major brands of cd-r. TDK, BASF etc.

Tested CD-RW Fuji (Grey-coating). Does not play high bitrates (SVCD, XVCD and HVCD). Bitrates till 1300 kb/s. No MP3.
The Info on svcd high bitrates is partly inaccurate. I encode mpg1, demux it, run elem streams through I-Author delux muxer and burn normaly with ez cd creator. Tested with bitrates up to 1800kbs av. Works perfectly.

Philips DVD940 Yes Yes More info here about the fast forward/rewind issue
Philips DVD950 Yes Yes $400-500 Can play VCD with higher res, such as 352X576 Howver as it stalls after a few seconds with a higher bit rate, so that is not much good at 1150kbs as it more blocky than a brick wall :-/ Can handle lower audio bit rates.

Philips DVD955 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 I tested it with CD-R Sony and TEAC-R55. VCD OK

I have only tried the blue media so far using nero. I have applied a firmware upgrade to my player, maybe that is why I can play CD-RW

Phoenix 203 Yes Yes
Pioneer DV-09 Yes No The player can only read high-quality CD-Rs. I've been able to get it to play discs (VCD) recorded on Taiyo Yudens.
Pioneer DV-101k Yes Yes $300-400 cd-r that played was a silver-black bottom, all other colors does not work. the cd-r was "shark" a low quality cd-r from japan. all cd-rw work, cause of the black bottom.

No CD-R's play on this machine but i know for sure that Traxdata 650Mb CD-WR do work very well!!!!!
Pioneer DV-103 ? ? $300-400
Pioneer DV-333 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300

Successor to the DV-525

VCD's worked fine using both CD-R Media and CD-RW media. Even worked with higher than VCD standard bit-rate movies but not with VBR movies. Used both cheap CD-R media as well as brand name discs with every brand working well. Didn't test SVCD as I had lots of trouble creating working SVCD movies. Image quality for DVD movies wasn't as good as some players I've seen but it wasn't that bad either. All in all a decent player for those interested in VCD CD-R playback.

I tested vcdz with Ritek (light green) Kodak (silver) and with Verbatim CD-RW. It played them all flawlessly ! I love it. It also plays XVCDs but they must be in standard format ex: if the resolution is PAL 384x288(?) the frame rate MUST be in PAL format also 25 fps. I had one vid that was PAl resolution but 30 frames per second and instead of playing it full screen it only displayed it in the left upper corner or the TV.. .weird.. anyways, the image quality is superb ! it was deffinetly worth the 390 $ canadian

I have an experience with a VHS recorded in VCD... The sound is very good and surround is great! It apears to have an extra process to surround. I make a anime VCD and test with VHS simultaneously and the VCD destroy(!) with the sound!

Played everything I threw at it. Cdr,cdr-w, any copy speed, 1x,2x,4x, many types of medial. Used nero and cdrwin.
Works on Memorex 650MB CD-R, Gigastorage 700MB CD-R and Gigastorage 700MB CD-RW
Pioneer DV-414 Yes Yes $200-300 Will play VCD burnt on CDRW. Tested only Hp's CRDW using Adaptec VCD Creator. With some VCDs burnt onto CD-RW, my 414 will incorrectly identify the disc as a regular audio CD. Leaving the disc in the tray, powering the 414 off and back on usually resolves the issue.

GREAT DVD player! Plays burnt VCDs on every type of CD-R media I've tested. Works on Maxell, TDK, Sony, Memorex, even those crappy CompUSA discs, anything! Works on all CD-RW media I've tested including shitty Pacific Digital discs! Video quality for DVDs is great with S-Video or the new component RGB connections. Does not play MP3.

i have only tried burning my vcd on cdrw and it worked. i used princo discs which i think are not so good. Sometimes green blocks come up on the screen and the video gets choppy.

I have been using this DVD player to play VCD's from everywhere, on any type of media imaginable. If the disc is recorded at 1x or 2x I never have a problem. I have been doing this for 2 YEARS. This and the 525 both are amazing at playing VCD. If you see green blocks, its not the DVD player, its the movie itself, or try recording at slower speed/different media. I dont even use it for DVD's VCD only. 1 Probelm, reboot fixed.
Pioneer DV-434 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 It has an awesome mpeg-2 and mpeg decoder in it. It played any svcd that I threw at it with awesome clarity. It played svcds that were made from really crappy mpegs, and played them without a hint of those stupid blocks that appear from a low data rate in high motion. I used blue-bottomed tdk cd-rs. I love this player. Just make sure that the svcd is compliant to its region code.
Pioneer DV-505 Yes Yes $200-300 Gigastorage brand 80min. CDRs will play just fine. They support recording speeds of 2x - 12x.

It plays vcd but only a few i have tried it with two brands so far but it has some problems with i think the way the vcd is burnt the brands are [pine 74min] [infiniti 74min] also had some [nugen media 80 min ] that play but the infinitit does not always play

I've been using Memorex CD-RW 74min with standard VCD and it works fine.
Pioneer DV-515 Yes Yes $400-500 At first, this player can play VCDs and backup VCDs. As the player get burned in, almost all the VCDs and backup VCDs gets ejected after various playing time. Other than that, this player is excellent.
Pioneer DV-525(K) Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 Very good player, plays everything i need. Some people says, player keeps some "strange" noise, but i never notify that kind a problem (?). Maybe its supermarket "super-hifi" speakers? ;)

Just tried a mini dvd and unfortuently it would not play it (it saw it as a regular "cd" instead). I used the sonic dvd it program and followed all steps plus trying several burn methods of my own (it also helps that this program supported my burner), but yes this is one thing that the player will not play

Play XVCD MPEG1 704x576 video 2500kb/s audio 224 kb/s

I have found that this thing will play everything. I personally use Memorex CD-R's, but it even plays those sorry CompUSA CD-R's too. Too bad its being discontinued but I hear the Pioneer DV-333 is taking its place.

Just to add a note that this dvd player wont play XVCD's at any other resolution than DVD PAL/NTSC resolutions NTSC 720x480 or PAL 704x576 Otherwise you just end up with a small picture in the corner. Also has trouble with XVCD bitrates that are too high. It just skips.

Plays CD-R recorded on all sorts of blank media - Blue, Green and Gold. Even the VCD's created on unbranded Chinese green CD-R's work with it! Plays on CD-RW media as well

I just wanted to correct some more info i have read, as i own this machine as well. the pioneer 525 will not read any kind of video cd with a bitrate higher then 2500. I also wanted to correct the following info: "any other resolution than DVD PAL/NTSC resolutions NTSC 720x480 or PAL 704x576 Otherwise you just end up with a small picture in the corner" This information is not entirely true, I use a Dazzle for my stuff, and the Dazzle captures at 352 x 240. This is what i use for my svcds, this i
Pioneer DV-530 Yes Yes $100-200 Play´s all type cd-r. mpeg 1 -704x576 mpeg 1 -352x288 PAL bitrate :all I tested 1750 kb/s 128 audio,perfectly
Pioneer DV-535 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 Generally, plays SVCD fine, even non-standard up to 704x568; the bitrate limit seems to be around 3kbps. Will properly play SVCDs with heavy VBR, even with ultra-low bitrates. Has problems with scaling 480 pixel width still frames to full resolution (sometimes works, sometimes not), can't play mpeg segment streams (i.e., animated menus). The audio selection is somewhat annoying, as it goes through Track 1 Stereo, Track 1 Left, Track 1 Right, Track 2 Stereo etc.

This player plays all cd's. It even plays data cd's, this means it will play the track. But afcourse no picture and no sound. It just reads every cd you throw at it.

Plays any type of CDR or CDRW. SVCD works fine :)
Pioneer DV-606(D) Yes Yes $200-300 Just tried a mini dvd and unfortuently it would not play it (it saw it as a regular "cd" instead). I used the sonic dvd it program and followed all steps plus trying several burn methods of my own (it also helps that this program supported my burner), but yes this is one thing that the player will not play

The player will play video cds and cdrw media. BUT it does not play regular cdrs. Although if you want to add i found by a fluke that it read memorex blue bottom cdrs. The rest i tried (it was a lot) it rejected and spit it back out. thanks. ALso it is not capaable of playing highrates or svcd. It will only play normal rate stuff. thanks

well it seems now that if you buy the Fuji 50 pack spindles (80min and 74min), the bottoms are now very light blue (unlike before) and come close to the memorex blue bottoms. So i tested a few and it can now read these as well. Please also note that i am not using the "audio cds", rather regular computer data ones. thanks

shortly ago i sent in some info about this player being able to play the fuji spindle type cdrs. Well this is now a 50/50 situation. What played on my player did not play on my friends 606d. and when it did it spazzed out after a minute or so. So if you plan on using the fuji cdrs on this, use them at your own risk. the memorex blue bottoms still work and play great on all players(606d players) tested with them. thanks
Pioneer DV-626(D) Yes Yes $300-400 Works with every cd-r media i've tested, gold, silver, cheap, expensive, it does not matter. Does NOT play SVCD, it incorrectly identifies the disc as a audio cd. NO XVCD support whatsoever, no mp3. I havent tried minidvd yet
Pioneer DV-636 ? Yes SVCD $500-600 This player worked fine with CD-RW (vcd, svcd). I tried the svcd image on CD-R (Rimax), it didn't work. It will probably work with other CD-RW.
Pioneer DV-717 Yes Yes $1000-2000 So far there where no problems, as a matter of fact, the results are extreme good, if I use an AC3 encoder and encode 6 wave files into one AC3 wave file (at 44.1 not 48 khz) and add that sound to an AVI, using BB to encode or better TmgEnc it just works great, I have a good picture, and dolby digital sound. Did a lot of research first before I had to correct sequence to make it worken that way, but it does now :)

Plays all kinds of CD-R`s and CD-RW`s
Pioneer DV-737 Yes Yes $800-900 According to a preliminary dealer report, this unit does NOT support SVCD -- like the 717, it will simply show a blank screen. Sad.
Pioneer DV-C302D Yes Yes SVCD $300-400 3-Disc DVD/CD Changer

I've tried every Cd-R (VCD) from CompUSA's crappy ones, to the high quality Black Cd-R's. All work very well on the Pioneer DV-C302D. I've had no problems to date, since December 99. DVD's are crystal clear using S-Video or component jacks. Doesn't play Mp3's. Other Cd-R's used: Imation, TDK, Maxell, Memorex, Sony, Ricoh Cd-RW, Etc...

VCD and SVCD play great! Except for native MP3's this thing will play about anything you put into it, including audio CDs burned on a PC.
Pioneer DV-C503D Yes Yes SVCD $300-400 Amazing quality and great for multi-disc movies. VCD's work great and dvd rips are just in amazing quality. I would recommend this player to anyone that wants and or needs a DVD player. Just amaizing!!!

This is one of the best damn DVD players Pioneer has come out with. The picture quality on DVD is excellent. I have thrown just about every kind of VCD, SVCD, XVCD possible on all types of media and this thing works wonders! I would highly recomend you get this player. The only downfall is no MP3 support but for a 5 disc player under 300 (if you shop around) this is an all time best buy!

5-Disc DVD/CD Changer

I have so-far tested it on All types of CD-R and Black coated CD-RW's I would recomend this player for anyone.

Used Imation 12x / 80min media. Five disk changer, ideal for playing long (multi-disk)SVCD home videos.
Pioneer DV-F727 Yes Yes $300-400 301-Disc DVD/CD Changer
Pioneer DV-K101 No Yes So far I haven't gotten any cd-r's to work but I got Samsung CD-RW to work in it... burned VCDs from bin/cue files... mpeg burning to vcd doesn't work...
Pioneer DV-K102 Yes Yes
Pioneer DV-K555 Yes Yes $500-600 The distinguish feature of this DVD player is the Karaoke function. There are two microphone inputs on the front. VCDs made from many brands (cheap/expensive) CD-Rs and Cd-RWs worked like a charm. However, SVCD is another story. The latter is only recognized as audio CD on this DVD player. P.S. With this list getting larger and larger (~350K in file size), do you think you need a database (i.e. MySQL) to store all this data. In addition, users can enter the data themselves which will save you time. Another benefit would be searching capabilities. Instead of scroll down to one's DVD player, one can search the whole list. Just a thought. PHP and MySQL rules!! If you are interested, I would volunteer some of my time to help you setup. Cheers, Kai
Pioneer DVL 909 Yes Yes Tested 5-6 different brands of CD-R's, no problems. Tested on 2 different CD-RW's (Lead and 3t), no problems. Tested CD's burnt with Nero, Adaptec Easy CD and CDRWin, all worked
Pioneer DVL 91 Yes Yes Play all kinds of CD-R/RW media (gold, silver, blue, green, black), DVD, Laser Disc, & Audio CD. Great video quality, haven't test SVCD or MiniDVD yet, but other than that its a good system with the Pioneer VSX-24TX THX reciever (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/elite/vsx-24tx.htm).

Pioneer NS-DV55 Yes ? SVCD $800-900
Pioneer PDV-LC10 Yes Yes SVCD $800-900 Only tested with NERO and Memorex CD-R/RW. Works great.

Played SVCD on Sony CD-RW

Played SVCD on Imation CD-R
Pioneer VSX 09TX Yes ? $800-900 Used Imation 12x / 80min CD-R's & Nero 5.0 Burner. The SVCD is treated as a CD by the DVD player.
Proceed PMDT No No $2000- You'd think for over $5,000 a player would play VCDs. Oh well. The good news is that it is software upgradeable, so they could add it relatively easily.
Proline DVD1000 No Yes $200-300 Very odd, Plays maxell R/W but struggles, wont play CDR, apart from a CDR I was given on a x8 Sirius disc. It plays this perfect, but I have tried to burn my own on Sirius and no joy (even 1-1 copy). Is it my writter ? Anyhow, gave up and bought a playstation movie card for £24, works great !

Won't play CD'r or CDRW discs, only tried VCD burnt with nero 5 and Winoncd. Anyone else had any luck?
ProScan PS8680Z No No $200-300
ProScan PS8682(P) No No $200-300 I still have yet to try SVCD, but I think it won't play them.

Actually, I cannot get any vcd's to work in my dvd player. I have the only proscan one you have listed. I've tried burning vcd's with both nero, and adaptec easy cd creator. And neither works

I remember the manual saying it would play video cds, but I have yet to get it to work. I tried it on a CD-R with Nero and the dvd player has loads of trouble trying to read the disc.

I tried playing CDR's from TDK, Verbatim, and even Memorex Platinum CDR and keep getting bad disc errors or no disc. Don't know if this is due to the color or tint of the CDR. Haven't tried gold or silver yet, but it must be the player I have.
Quadro 700 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300
Raite AVPhile 711 Yes Yes $100-200 This unit plays on any gold/blue, silver/blue CD-R media that I've used (Maxwell, generics from CompUSA) without any trouble. Have not tried XVCD or SVCD yet.
Raite AVPhile 713/715 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 Plays SVCD, XVCD and MP3. Revision 2.4G plays also DVD-RAM. FirmwareUpdate by CDr. German forum/faq Swedish forum
RCA 5 disk changer No Yes SVCD $200-300 Well I made an svcd and it played it flawlessly. Cheap silver/blue 18cent cd's. It sorta played vcd's but skipped alot i think i screwed up making it, frist try after all.

It won't play any CD-R material at all. Claims to play VCD. Was very dissapointed in this machine.
RCA 5215P No Yes $200-300 Plays DVD and Commerical Pressed Video cd's. Will not play a vcd off cd-r or cd-rw. Plays vcd 2.0 only. Newer RCA dvd players have the video cd logo on the box. See also the pdf file on RCA site for the video cd logo in manual. I'm guessing that the laser will only read commercial pressed vcd's.

will not play cdr(tried 6 different brands) plays cdrw fine

Doesn't work with Memorex Cd-R, CD-RW. Doesn't work with Sony CD-RW, Maxell CD-RW, Imation CD-RW, FUJI CD-RW I think that about covers it.

Bought this at CompUSA as a clearance item for $149. Used a VCD and an Audio CD burned on a CompUSA CR-RW (dark gold backs, 2X), and it plays fine. Tried several brands of CD-R media (TDK, Imation, Hi-Val, Fuji), but it would not play them at all.
RCA 5220P No Yes $200-300 For some reason, I could not get any CDRW to work with my RCA 5220PB DVD player. The manual does say this DVD player supports VideoCD format, however the manual also says that "This drive cannot play CDR/CDRW material". I tried a Sony CDRW, and all the drive said was "Incompatible media" or something to that nature. If anyone has been able to figure this DVD drive out, send me an email. CDR's tested include Sony, and TDK, and both did not work(blue back for TDK CDR, and tried Sony CDRW as well).

RCA RC5210P Yes Yes MODEL No. :RC5210P SERIAL NO. :817420*** MANUFACTURED:APRIL, 1998 Plays CD-R's & CD-RW's blue-green & silver Also played the SVCD cif-image from above. Only problem is when playing blue-green CD-R's. Sometime I have to take it out and put back in a couple of times to work...No mp3 support or I doing something wrong.
RCA RC5221P No Yes !!!THE ONLY PROBLEM!!! I have tested a movie made on a Cd-r and it was the blue-greenish type on the write side, it refused to read it at all. It might either not be able to read it or the type of media. The Cd-r it wouldnt work with was Memorex High Cap. 700Meg. Pro. CD-R. However, I have it working good with Sony standard CD-RW.
RCA RC5223P No Yes $200-300 Will play smart and friendly cdrw and memorex cdrw. Also plays 480x480 in the vcd 2.0 format with bitrates ~2300 128bit audio(4:3 standerd must be turned on in player)

It'll play VCD's on Smart & Friendly CD-RW's (SAF505), but has problems with Ricoh CD-RW's. Does not play SVCD's and does not read CDR's.

Refuses to play any sort of CD-R, but it plays VCD's beautifully on Verbatim and Imation CD-RW's.
RCA RC5910P-B No ? $200-300 Worked with Mr. Platinum silver/green CDRs but did not work with PNY silver/silver CDRs. Tested this one in the store.

SAMPO DVE-360 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $300-400 It plays MP3 from 56kbps up to 320kbps, and also VBR(variable bite rates) files. Also support MP3 random play! I tested R+RWs, no problems discovered yet. MiniDVD supported up to 5000kbs, if faster the drive has problems to follow(readspeed 4xDVD+4xCDR/RW) DTS+AC3+MPEG Decoder on board! RC codes and macrovision can be changed by numbers.
Sampo DVE-660 Yes No MP3 $100-200 Having problem playing VCD burned on CD-RW. The same CD-RW disc played fine on Apex 600A and JVC 523GD.
Samsung DVD 511 No Yes $100-200 The only cd-rw that I found to work all the time is Memorex 4x Platinum. Best Buy has them 5pack for $7.99. I am still loking for cheaper cd-rw.

Play VIDEOCD on CDR PRINCO.

Have tried memorex, maxell, verbatim and acer cd-r's. don't work. Have tried cd-rw's most work, tried a brand called pacific digital which worked half the time. also tried a no name cd-rw which also worked half the time, it has a picture of a rooster on it
Samsung DVD 608 Yes Yes $100-200 Works with any CD-R surface! Best with the silver.
Samsung DVD 611 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 Works perfectly!! and is extremely goodlooking too!!

Hi, I have tested today the Samsung DVD 611 PAL version player at a friend´s place. It can NOT play MiniDVDs ! I have tested various miniDVDs and all don´t play ! It also can not play CD-RW SVCDs, just CD-R SVCDs at least with my Media. Also the integrated DVD ROM drive is much slower in CD-R mode than my Yamakawa 780 drive ! It did also play 720x576 SVCDs but these were really slow and jerky, because the drive seems only to run in 2x speed in SVCD mode ! Thus the data rate of over 5 Mbits/sec of the clips was too much data for it, so it was slow and skippy... But at least it can play them, so I could author the 720x576 SVCDs with lower data rate and then they are okay also with that player !

Plays on both Memorex CDR and CDRW, but lots of skipping and freezing have make viewing homemade VCD's impossible.

This player has trouble with CD-R (It's not supposed to work at all) but I've found that any Silver-Blue media will generally read OK. Cheap 'Pacific Digital' discs I had lying around play VCD fine. MP3 is a different story, it skips no matter what media I throw in. Strange, as where is someone going to buy a commercial silver CD with an ISO filesystem and MP3's on it?

So far i have got a vcd, svcd and an xvcd burned on a verbatium cd-rw and on a Hi-Val cd-rw to work, you may have to open and close the drive once or twice to get it to work if it stops loading, it CAN play mp3s but i have only tried it on a cd-rw and it skips but it does have a list of all the songs so it may work on cd-r. This player cannot read Fujifilm blue bottoms at all, it can read vcds made on the gigastorage 80
Samsung DVD 709 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 I tried to burn a VCD with Nero 5, using a 74 minute Traxdata Gold CDR - didn't work. The same media worked fine if I burned it as a SVCD instead - go figure.

The Samsung DVD 709 plays VCD's created on Traxdata CD-R silver and Memorex CD-R. It plays commercially pressed VCDs, but I've never been able to get it to play my CD-R VCDs at all. I use Adaptec Easy CD and Memorex CD-Rs. Two friends can both play my CD-R VCDs on their (different brand) players, so I think I'm creating them properly. the samsung 709 will play 74minute Infinity digital cdr every time burn with adaptec 4 copy cd it is the only discs that work for copying video cds

OK like I have tried EVERY "on the shelf" CD-r's and CD-rw's anf NOTHING works. The ONLY thing that has worked was the OLD samsung cd-r's and cd-rw 4x.. which isnt around anymore. So save your money and go with a better player

LEAD DATA 80min works fine, but is the only it will accept. I use Nero to burn.

The CD's that I have been using are Digital Media. I have used both 74 & 80 Min. ones. The CDRW that it worked with was Verbatim DataLifePlus 10x. The CD Burner used was a Plextore 12/10/32. This DVD player WILL NOT PLAY VCDz created using CDRWIN. My VCDz always work when I use Fireburner or Nero.

works ok with traxdata silver 74 (not 80), works best with megadata 74, most brands do not work ! cd-rw ok though.

I tried it with non-branded 74min cdr and it worked. The DVD player took a while trying to read the VCD but it worked fine. I used TMPEGenc to encode the VCD and Nero to burn it to CDR.

All I can say is Sirus CD-R's Every one I have tried has been perfect. No Problems with them, And they are cheap =)

Plays homemade vcds 74 min acer
Samsung DVD 711 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 These are currently on sale at Best Buy (12/2/00). best Buy says it plays mp3s, cdrs and cdrw's in-store and on the website. It plays mp3s with some occassional skipping (samsung website makes no mention of the mp3 ability). It plays VCDs burned on CDR media but *not* CDRW. In fact, I couldn't get any CDRW's to work...even the expensive platinum Memorex on mine. That was trying it for dad. may work for music. The CDR works great (I used Imation) for audio, mp3, and a burned VCD test. No skipping at all. be careful with this unit as I had to return one as it didn't play anything but regular dvd and factory pressed vcd. These are made in Taiwan at Best Buy, not Canada, so CDRs work. If someone finds a brand of cdrw that works, please let me know. I recommend this player, though the mp3 menu is cryptic. They are currently on regular price of $199 at Best Buy.

Says 'MP3 Music Playback in CD/CDR' on the box, but it skips -- badly. USA Samsung support says MP3 isn't supposed to work [???]. Manual says nothing about MP3 [though the display shows 'MP3' when one is inserted].

Plays the sample SVCD OK. DVD video quality excellent, as was audio. Plays audio CD's on CDR's ok. Does not play MP3's, skips constantly even though the US website currently says that it will. I apparently purchased a "Canadian" unit. *****CAUTION***** After several rounds of Emails to Samsung I was advised that the DVD-711 as sold in different countries with the same model number will perform to different specifications and "Samsung Canada does yet support MP3 CD-R files on these devices". Unless you know the market that they were built for (remember...they all have the same DVD-711 model number), bring CD's of every type you want to play and try it before purchasing oth
Samsung DVD 739 No ? $200-300 I tried a standard 80 minute cd burned with nero and nothing worked, just gave "insert disc" sign. the cd r brand is hypermedia
Samsung DVD 811 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 Plays VCD, SVCD, MP3 (miniDVD not tested) Plated colour, nice remote, built in decoder AC-3 5.1 Composite, S-Video and RBG Out. Played SVCD & MP3 at variable bitrate (VBR). Play all CDR (green, blue...)& CDRW. I would recommend this player if you're serious about buy quality products that perform at a reasonable price
Samsung DVD 812 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 This player has played all CD-R media that I've thrown into it. I purchased the player mainly because of the MP3 ability, and it does this well. I have since become addicted to VCD's. :)
Samsung DVD 907 No Yes SVCD $200-300 All CD-R;s I have tested do not even read (TDK, and so no brand name) CD-RW from Pacific Digital, TDK, Maxell, Yamaha, Sony, That's Write, and probably all others works in SVCD and VCD. VCD/SVCD at higher rate than 1400kbps have problems.

Wven if you burn vcd's at speed 1(no matter the quality of disc) this model will not even read the disc, let alone play it, even audio cd's cause problems although the quality of picture and sound on origional disc's are excellent
Samsung DVD 909 Yes Yes SVCD $300-400 I get good results with acer CDR,s. Burned at one speed with Adaptec easy cd-creator 4.0 You don't get the digitized images with this brand. Maybe because they are all blue. SVCD didn't work at all. It recognizes the cdr and starts playing only no sound and vision.

Ok people i found some more CD-R working on my 909. Samsung CDR SILVER 74" work so fine!! I burn a VCD from the presentation VHS of my company at 4X and did it work good. But i do more....i burn an hybrid VCD with tracks for VCD/DVD player and info for PC like AVIs / PDF and autostart!

It can play VCDs on CD-R, burned at single speed using NERO or ADAPTEC Easy CD-Creator 4.0. Don't try any faster speed, because samsung will not accept the disc. I tried ACER, NASHUA and no-name CD-R without any problems.

Sorry But I have to say that my dvd 909 do not work with cd-r from Silverblue even burned at speed 1 and with Nero

Technical specs talks about compatibility with VideoCD 2.0 but didn't work on my player, only old release of Nero with any CD-R works...i tryed to make a still images comilation (like photoCD) using VCD specs but didn't work!

Ok boys i found a CD-RW media that work fine on my player! Is a CD-RW 74Min from Lead Data called Silver Blue Professionale. Now works in VideoCD 2.0 too and also still image compilation with WinOnCd working good! So i test for XVCD and SVCD sooon!
,my player play VCD's burned on any RW-disks I've tested and on Traxdata Silver & Fujifilm Silver CD-R disks. It also should play SVCD but I haven't tried. Ans DVCD but I really don't know what they are =) I used Easy CD Creator 4 Deluxe...

I found that VCD 1.1 will only play sparatically, sometimes it will sometimes it wont. I f

Samsung DWM-360 Yes ? SVCD $100-200 I only use Memorex cdr media so that is all I have tested with it. I love this DVD player, it seems to do everything that the more expensive players do. It looks sooooo much better than the standard players do. The only problem I had was the Microvision Protection. I do not have RCA jacks on my TV so I connected it to my Goldstar HIFI VCR and it faded in and out, then I tried my old Samsung And BINGO! it Looks great.
Samsung Extiva DVD-N2000 Yes ? $300-400 Have only had luck with PRINCO brand CDR media. Video Quality is excellent no problems whatsoever.

Sanyo DVD-6070 Yes ? $200-300 Says Plays CDr's right on the box, and it does like a dream! I've tried 3 or 4 different brands so far and they all worked amazingly. Havent tried cdrw's, SVCD or miniDVD, will keep you posted. This DVD Player is (from what I can see) an exact copy of the Fisher S1500 (sanyo owns fisher) minus the colours (fisher is black & sanyo is silver), right down the the remote control and Blue tray LED
SCAN SC2000 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 The price is 187 U.K. pounds , It plays the SVCD demo on both CD-R and CD-RW. this unit is the same as the Daewoo 2200 but it has two scarts and is finished in black. Plays everything i've tried, Only problem is 2CH audio levels are sometimes too low.

Same as Daewoo DHC-2200K but with two scarts and finished in black. (Secret Menu !!!) plays the demo SVCD on both CD-R's and CD-RW's. Down mixed 2CH audio can be too low sometimes not sure the SCAN 'fix' for this works
Scott DVD Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 all cd-r/cd-rw brands I tried so far worked, mp3 playback is good, the mp3-menu sucks though (only 8 letters displayed), ac3 decoder built in (haven't tried it yet), volume control built in, codefree, macrovision off, DVD playback is okay to good, some DVDs lock up though.

I did not have any problems with cdr-media. Even low-cost-CD-Rs work fine.

Sharp 600U No Yes My standalone sharp 600 uk model will play VCD white book standard created using Win on cd 3.6. Encoded using Pinnacle studio MP10 recorder utility on CDRW. works well on the following brands of media: Memorex , Philips & Verbatim(all tested). does not work with Samsung and unbranded.results are very good with no artifacts making themselves known. very fluid motion and around VHS quality or slightly above.

Does play homemade VCDs written on CD-RW. I took an avi that was downloaded from my sony TRV20 converted it to a 2.0 compilant VCD mpeg1 file using TMPGE software and then burned it to a CD-RW using NTI's cd burner software(it has a 'burn a VCD' option) After putting the disk in my DVD player the time counter stopped at 2 sec. After pushing all the keys on the remote, I found that the RESUME button would cause the VCD to play, but it was very fuzzy, after a second press of the RESUME button the picture cleared up and all is great.(not VHS quality, but good enough to watch)
Sharp DV 654Z No No $400-500 Great Image and Great Sound. 5.1 channel Decoder 96KHz/24Bit No Multiregion
Sharp DV 710 No No $100-200 Will not accept recordable media at all as stated at the owner's manual.

I used Verbatim Datalife Plus CD-R on my DVD player and it will not play my VCDs. They where all made properly when ever i took my VCD to my friends Pioneer CD it worked perfectly. Also the Sharp DV-710 would not play my music CD's . I may need to try a different brand of CD-R.
Sharp DV 750 No Yes $200-300 I used a CD-RW by Verbatim on mine, it worked fine.

Tried Memorex and Verbatim CDRW and it didn't work. I tried Memorex and Maxell CDR's and that didn't work either. Bummerz =( =(

SM Supervision 2000 Yes ? If you believe the manual and a friend of mine it works with cd-rw. The Remotecontrol only works if you are standing straight in front of it. At an angle of 30 degrees, the remotecontrol fails! I never had success in creating a svcd, but it should work!
Smart DVD2000 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 The Smartmedia company is due to launch a new DVD player soon to be called the SmartDVDMP3 2000 player and it WILL play MP3 recorded onto CD-R .... truly amazing!!

SMC 330S Yes Yes SVCD $100-200 I tested this unit at Fry's and it played my CDR and CDRW VCDs on the cheap Ritek (CDR) and CMC (CDRW) both of which were CompUSA brand. Only this model and the expensive Pioneer brand DVD players played these cheap copied VCDs. It was disturbing how MANY other dvd players couldn't play them. I bought this one!

Any kind of cdr-media will pretty much work on this dvd player. Very good and reasonable price.
SMC 530 Yes Yes I had no problems with this DVD player with copied VCD AT ALL. It plays them all fine.It has a normal PC DVD drive built in and its made to look like its a proper DVD player... Its pure CLASS!
Sony DAV-S300 Yes Yes $400-500 The Sony DAV-S300 system overall is just awesome. I have only used Memorex High Speed CD-RW's 8x/10x for VCDs. I haven't encountered any problems with the playing of them as of yet on those CD-RW's. I did however have problems playing CD-R's and that sucks because all my Audio CDs are on CD-R's and I can't play them on the DAV-S300. So stick with the CD-RW's!

PNY CDR MEDIA WORKED MEMOREX CDRW MEDIA WORKED NO NAME BRAND CDRW WORKED USED PANASONIC v2.51 MPEG ENCODER BURNED VCD WITH EITHER EZCD CREATOR OR NERO DOES ANYONE KNOW IF USING CDRW MEDIA CAN DAMAGE YOUR DVD PLAYER? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP AND TIME.

VCD's were fine recorded on no-name cdrw's. Haven't tried cdr's but have been told Princo brand should work. Software used was TMPGEnc beta 12+ for encoding and Adaptec Easy CD 4 for the burning, using an Acer 4432. Price of the sony unit $1200 australian

No problem with CD-R and CD-RW. The sound system is good except this model does not support Digital Input from other DVD player. Although it is marked 220V, it does support from 100V to 240V (auto-voltage).
Sony DVP-C600D Yes ? SVCD $300-400 There is a noticeable 1-2 sec delay between layer changes, which is obviously annoying when it occurs in the middle of a dramatic scene. While it played my VCD burned on a cheap Hotan (bought at Fry's Electronics), the player had trouble with fast action sequences (displayed total garbage).

Plays SVCD. Couldn't read any CD-RW. Only CD-R. I got a Nero burned SVCD (on PNY 80min CD-R) to play.
Sony DVP-C650D No Yes $400-500 Tested with Imation, Sony, Memorex, and Maxell CD-R Media - ALL FAILED (both VCD and music). Tested VCD with Memorex CD-RW and it works!!! Have yet to test music, but I'm sure it'll be successful.

CDR VCDs have only worked with Pinco silvers, golds do not seem to work. Also even though the player works with Pinco CDRs, I can hear it changing speeds in the player. This compared to CDRWs that seem to play without a hitch. CDRWs I've tried are CompUSA 2x and HP 4x. Software: Adaptec 3.5 video CD creator does not always work. Nero 5.x has worked everytime. I once read about a 40 minute max on VCDs but have had up to 55 minutes using Nero so far. If the software doesnt work then the player displayed something like "C13 00" Even so, this same CD players in the PC fine...

I have tried two cd-rw brands Memorex an dimation both fine. SVCD didn't work when i tried rw since it won't read r but i have heard silver bottom cd-r's work. xvcd not tested minidvd not tested to be soon no problems on vcd hi res stills are great.

To add to your results above music CD on Memorex CD/RW is flawless. Used Nero 5.0.2.2. Also post here or notify me if you find a CDR that plays on this player I can't play CD/RW on my cars stereo so'd be nice to have one disc to play on all! Thanks
Sony DVP-CX 850D No Yes $300-400 I only tried to play vcd on a maxell cdr gold with no luck if you know of any other cdr or cdrw types that I can use on my dvd player I will appreciated if you informed me

Does not work with these tested CDR's: CompUSA 74min, Verbatim Datalife plus. Burn speed 12x. Works with Memorex CDRW media Burn speed 2x. Will contuine to test on other media and speeds.
Sony DVP-FX1 Yes Yes SVCD Plays SVCDs on CD-R
Sony DVP-K330 No Yes So far, I have no success with any CDR, have tried OEMs (Blue-Green) and Kodak Gold. For CDRW, Verbatim, Traxdata, Samsung are alll okay except for some distortions (greens flickers) on every CDRWs. OEMs CDRW (Silver-Blck) does not work at all.
Sony DVP-S300 Yes Yes I have had good luck with green backs, gold backs and silver. Some blue backs don't work. I primarily use Sony, TDK, Maxell, or Memorex. Hi-Val CD-R's didn't work for me

No go on SVCDs. Is able to play non-standard vcds at 1640 video/192 audio. Using verbatim blue backs. Encode with flask and panasonic to mpeg1 stream, then use tmpegenc to demux and remux as vcd. Works!
Sony DVP-S3000 Yes No $500-600 Only plays gold or silver cd's It can not find the index on the light blue or dark blue discs. (music or video) And this unit has two laser pickups.
Sony DVP-S315 Yes? No ? $200-300 Won´t play blue CD-R:s
Sony DVP-S325 Yes Yes $200-300 This dvd player is good but doesn't play VCDs on CD-R, only on CD-RW (i have tested Verbatim only and it's good).

Generally it does not play CD-R VCDs but there are some kind of them it can play. Which one it is the case to check. Somebody should look at first for CD-R with cyan dye layer and silver reflection layer what gives blue-green color of recording side. I have successfully checked B-W-E 80min (I afraid no more available, this I checked I've bought one year ago, www.b-w-e.de), Intenso 74min: 1 CD in Jewel Case, Intenso 80min:10 CDs - paper bag in plastic display, 10 CDs - Jewel Case in box (www.intenso.de/).

ONY DVP-S325 MR PLATINIUM CDR WORKS EVERY TIME.
Sony DVP-S330 Yes Yes $100-200 Tested using Memorex CD-R media and CD-RW media. Player does not play this brand of CD-R, but did play the CD-RW.

It can play legal VCDS, but not the copy ones that I made, which includes different types of CD-R media, ranging from TDK, sony and generic cdrs. Verbatim CDRW blue's didn't work. Memorex CDRW worked perfectly.

works on all cdr media that i have burned and used except blue backs, also it works on all cd-rw media, Everything i have burned has been done with fireburnner and only fireburner.

Comp-USA cheap green backs to not work in sony dvp s330

Plays VCD burned on Gigastorage Blue/Silver CD-R media using Nero 5.
Sony DVP-S335 Yes Yes $200-300 Used Princo CD-RW74 and it worked fine. Also tried various other CD-R Brands which all did not worked except for CD-R's with silver/ blue color (e.g. Vivastar)

It only plays Original VCDs not burned ones. Doesn't even play audio cd-rs while it plays original audio cds . I tried CD-R's from "Princo" - it works!

In Germany: I've tried YELLOW PRINCOS as VideoCD and Audio CD on a SONY DVP-S335 and definitly it works. I've got here other PRINCO colors (pink/lightgreen etc.) and write here again when they are tested by me!
Sony DVP-S336 Yes Yes $200-300 This player is an amazing piece for anyone who has a receiver with a Dolby digital decoder in it. It plays CD-RW audio and video CDs, but NOT CD-R discs of any type.

Princo media seem to be the only CD-R media that VCD's work on, I've only tried small clips, so I can't verify how well they work over longer clips.
Sony DVP-S360 Yes Yes $100-200 For CD-RW, CompUsa Cdrw's work great and they come at about $.20 each.........memorex also works as said above. And Imation cdrs dont work like said above.

Memorex media used CDRW. Plays perfect. Only tested with nero burning software.

VCD functionality works fine with cheap CD-R media (Prime Peripherals 8x). Burned the VCD with Nero 4.09. Haven't tried with CD-RW, though.

No CD-R's worked on this player, contrary to what is posted here. I tried Kodak (Gold), Verbatim (Blue), and Imation (Green) Brand CD-R's. CD-RW seems to work fine, though. Works fine with both Maxell and Memorex Brand CD-RW. All VCD burning was done with Nero 5.0 and an HP CD-R/RW Drive.
Sony DVP-S500D Yes Yes $500-600 I bought an original VCD, and made a Back Up Copy (Maxell CD-R) with Adaptec easy Creator 4+, and it played on my DVD Player. It didn't work when I tried to record & play *.Mpg's themselves. I have not yet made a VCD myself, but back up copies worked. I will not fail I am still trying!!!

I got this player for $600 over two years ago. I don't think Sony makes it anymore. I just tested it against the Super Video CD image on this site. It starts up and knows it's a Video CD, but it just sits there and doesn't play anything. If I stop and restart it, it gives me a "C:13:00" error which by the manual, indicates that the disc is dirty and to clean per their directions which I know the disc is perfectly clean, I tried to play the SVCD about 30 seconds after I burned it.
Sony DVP-S501D Yes No Plays high bitrate VCD. 352x240 video 2450 kb/s(CBR and VBR) audio 224 kb/s It doesn't play SVCD and miniDVD. http://m_ao.tripod.co.jp/
Sony DVP-S525D Yes Yes $500-600 Haven't had any luck with CD-R's, tried BASF and Sony CDR. Works with Philips CD-RW. No MP3 or minidvd or SVCD/XCD

XVCD on princo media max butrate 2500 work fine

I tested with princo cd-rw verbatim cd-rw and traxdata cd-rw works verry good.I also test it with princo cd-r (silver-blue) it works verry good too and Bulc cd-r but it has a problem it reds when if the cd is audio but it is not read when the cd is VCD.

Plays VCD/Audio cd on cdrw (all kinds). Have testet VCD/audio on cdr. Works really great on Mr.Platinum (cdr), Sirius (cdr), Medion (cdr), but not on Fuji (cdr), Kodak (cdr), Pioneer (cdr), Verbatim (cdr). Great DVD-player with A-Class Digital/DTS sound og smooth picture.
Sony DVP-S530D No Yes   $300-400 I Have a DVD Player from SONY, DVP-S530D and I have two CD-RW drive, a HP 7200+ and the other is made by Phillips for the Compaq presario and is constructed on Hungary.

In both CD-Writers All the Princo's CDR-80 Disc, with Music or VCD play well on the DVD Player, when moving from one track to another sometines or generally the last tracks on the disc take about 3 o 5 maybe 10 seconds to access the track.

Other CD-R brands do not play (music) like Maxels, Sony, Pioneer, Basf, Verbatin, etc. All was created with Easy CD Creator, Tomorow I'll Test it with Nero 5.09.

The CD-RW Disc from HP, Cursor & LG (Gold Star) play very well.

The only CD-R's I found that work (totally by accident) are GQ (Great Quality) From Fry's. Imagine that. 10 for $3.90 including jewel cases. The Sony manual states that it does not support CD-R discs. in real small print.

Tried Verbatim and Maxell 80 min cdr's and neither worked got the No Disk message, gonna try some cheap cdrw's now

Plays VCDs on generic CDRW. looks like the problems with CDR is due to laser pickup. CDRW has better reflectivity and works great. Ttried to burn with PNY cdrw but success only came with the sony cdrw(what a coincidence). i also tried to burn with cdrs but you were right they didn't work

Tested using 5 types of CDR ...works. Imaition CDR, Sony CDR, Kodak GOLD, and Memorex Platinium CDR, TDK 12X. Seems that I don't have any problem burning any of the above in my Plextor CDR and be able to play it....

used generic cdrw worked then i tried sony cdr 74 min and it didn't work

If you create a VCD with any brand CDR it gives the message NO disk It applies to AUDIO as well If you create VCD with Maxell CDRW it works most of the time Generic CDRWs don'g work

Heres what I have tried: Office Max CD-R do not work, PNY CD-R Do not work, Smart And Friendly 4x CD-RW (extended capacity) does work! Please mail me if theres a way to make PNY cdr or any work!
,my Sony DVP-S530D reads the burned VCD on all brands of CD-RW event the cheapest. However, I have no luck on CD-R

I just wanted to confirm that the Sony Player will not play Sony CD-Rs. I converted an AVI to an MPG, using TMPGNC, then went into Nero and burned a VCD. The disc works find on my computer, but not in the Sony player. I'll try the CD-RWs next.

Tested vcd/svcd on Maxell CDRW Platinum

Sony DVP-S535D Yes Yes SVCD $300-400 VCD and SVCD burned with NERO 5.0 on RICOH or PRINCO RW played OK. No luck with CD-R. Must try PRINCO!

I tested on Princo silver-blue, Koch and B.W.S.I will test with cd-rw soon.
Sony DVP-S550D Yes Yes   $200-300 For VCD won't work with either Kingston Corp Hypermedia CD-R 1x-12x 74min nor red label insert Imation CD-R 1x-12x 80min. Works okay with blue label insert Imation CD-RW 650MB/74min.

Memorex did not CD-R. Smart-Friendly CDRW work. Worked on cheap-o 'Office Depot' Brand CDR's (Green Back 74min CDR). Also Noticed Imation 1x-4x Green Backs don't work too good, sometimes won't read the disk. But Imation 1x-8x CDR's work good. Used Panasonic Encoder to create the video. And Easy CD Creator v4 (Video) to burn the VCD 2.0 PBC Disk

YES. My VCDs play just fine on my S550D. I'm using cheap CompUSA 4x CD-Rs. I didn't have any luck with CompUSA CD-RWs.

I've tried the GQ (Great Quality) CD-RW with no success - get the No Disc message. The Memorex Platinum CD-RWs work great.

Can read VCDs created on Princo CD-R, Memorox CD-RW, CompUSA CD-R and CD-RWs. Tried on Imation 4X but no luck.

No cdr's work for music.I have tried imation 8x discs for vcd and I get the no disc message. All music cdr's show the no disc message.

Created a video CD using a Great Quality (GQ) CD-R (green coating). The DVD player could not detect the disc. No disc message appeared on the screen. Tried a TDK CD-R with a blue coating to do the same. Once again no disc message appeared. Finally used a Memorex CD-RW (with a silver coating). It played just fine. I think any CD-R or CD-RW with a silver coating should work finw in this DVD player

First tried Verbatim 12x CD-R, no dice. Next, tried Imation CD-RW -- success!
Sony DVP-S560D Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 CD-R - Nothing I've tried works (PNY 80s, TDK, Hypermedia 80s, Generic 74/80s) CD-RW - Generic, Comp USA, Imation Work for VCD & SVCD.

Used Samsung silver cdr and a Memorex CDRW. Both came up as saying no disc.

I tried Verbatim CD-R's, Pacific Digital CD-R's, Sony CD-R's, gold CD-R's, and Sony CD RW and it would only read the RW's

Tried various cd-rs to no avail. Works fine with smart+final and acer cd-rw. It plays SVCD (480X480 @2.5Mb/s) that I encoded on a cd-rw.

Only brand of CD-R's I've found that work are Pacific Digital 80 minute 700mb disks.

will not play Memorex CDR 80min green audio will not play Pacific Digital CDRW audio will play VCD on Pacific Digital CDRW

Will play vcds! burned in Nero 5.0+ on Acer green 74 minutes, won't read Verbatim CDRW'S or CDr blue.Won't read Maxell & Memmorex Green 74 minutes either.

I tried PNY 80min (700MB) CDR, and they worked great. I tried TDK 74min (650MB) CDR, and they did NOT work. I used Nero 5.0.0.9 on both tests.
Sony DVP-S570D No Yes SVCD $500-600 Used Hp-RW - worked fine; Used TDK CD-R also worked fine.

This player will read all brands of RW disc VCDs that I have tried (Memorex, Pacific Digital, BASF, TDK) but it seems to display a better image on the Memorex and BASF (I believe this is just due to the quality of the particular discs, not the brand.) On the two Pacific Digital and one TDK discs the image would repeatedly break up or the sound would become unsync'd. These are probably just bad discs but I don't know for sure. I get the feeling this player would read any brand of RW. It will not read any CDRs because it does not have the dual laser pickup.
Sony DVP-S7000 Yes ?     only tested vcd so far on acer silver cdr
Sony DVP-S715 Yes Yes   $600-700 Gold media works for a while (typically the first 25 minutes) and then starts to mess up picture/sound. Silver (both blue and green) media works perfectly.

Recognises SVCD as Video CD, but returns error when it tries to play the disc.

All CD-R media I've tried works perfectly (dozens of brands, all kinds of dies), both audio and VCD. No CD-RW discs (Ricoh, Princo) worked, neither for audio nor for VCD.
Sony DVP-S725D Yes Yes   $800-900 SONY read CDR's silver coated, BUT burned with 4x speed and more. I've made it with PRINCO SILVER BLUE CDR. It really works!
Sony DVP-S735D Yes Yes SVCD $400-500 Plays Audio,VCD,SVCD on Philips CD-RW

Tested CD-R (Audio): [all CD-Rs burned with a PLEXTOR 12/10/32 IDE at 4x speed] FAILED: TDK CD-R80 (silver/blue) FUJI-FILM CD-R AUDIO 75 (silver/green) PHILIPS CD-R 74 CD-Recordable Professional All Speed (silver/green) SUNSTAR CD-R 74 (silver/blue) VERBATIM CD-R metal-azo 1x-8x (silver/blue) TDK CD-R74 (silver/green) SONY CD-R AUDIO (silver/green) TRAXDATA 80 CD-R silver (silver/green) INTENSO 74Min multispeed (gold/green) PIONEER 74Min (silver/blue) PHILIPS CD-R 74 1x-8x (silver/green) FUJIFILM CD-R650MB (silver/green) Has anyone an idea which CD-R can be played in this SONY DVD player? ([email protected])

Touchmate(princo) cdr -silver/blue or silver/lightgreen works flawlessly(4x-8x). Further, I tested mercury CDRW(Kobian) and Datalife CDRW, SONY CDRW (all 4x) and they also work just fine. great player, multi region.
works with SONY CD/RW 1x/2x/4x
Sony DVP-S7700 Yes Yes SVCD $600-700 My Sony S7700 plays VCDs on CD-R perfectly (even on those CompUSA CDs). It will not, however, play anything on CD-RW - period! I have been able to get it to play SVCDs on CD-R, but it will not show the correct trak time, nor are ANY features (such as scan or even track selection) possible. Therefore, I would definately NOT recommend THIS player for SVCD. Also, only SVCDs that were made with CBR or CQ 65 (in TMPEGEnc) would play without being trashed into noise after the first few seconds. VCDs do play great though.

Burning CD following instructions on this site went OK. Player recognizes "Video CD" when inserted . After hitting "start" it does not play and shows after approx. 5 sec a code both in the display and on the screen "C0013" i cannot find anywhere in the manual what this means. According to your compatibility list it should play VCD's perfectly. What went wrong?? email [email protected]

In contrast to the previous report I have had no problems playing SVCD on this player. I'm using TPMGenc to encode and Nero 5.0 to burn onto Kodak Gold CD-R media. I can change chapter, use CQ-VBR 100, rewind, fast forward, freeze frame. The only thing that is wrong is the display on the player which shows track duration to be twice the length it actually is, otherwise SVCD seems to work fine. Perhaps there is a firmware issue with the player itself and only later firmwares play SVCD's:/
Teac DVD-990 Yes Yes   $1000-2000 CD-R maxMax colour water blue best not made to read cd-r's have had very good results on audio and VCD
TEAC DV-1050 Yes ?   $300-400 Play XVCD at 3MBPS also !
TEAC DV-2000 Yes Yes   $400-500 So far only PRINCO brand CDR works with this player and I have tried TDK, KODAK GOLD & KODAK ULTIMA/SILVER, DATASTREAM 80min, MEMOREX. With CDRW media I have tried both KOADAKcdrw and INTERTAN (Radio Shack brand), both cdrw work flawlessly even after blanking and writing over 5 times. "Now where did I get those PRINCOS from again"....."doh!" PS for AU-VIC: $380 down from $469, opening sale at new MegaMart
test ? ? SVCD $200-30044
Thomson DTH-4200 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 Very good Video on SVCD. Accept overlord bitrate on SVCD. It work with bitrate 3000 (usually 2520 for SVCD). No prob synchro sound/picture. Accept MP3 CD with lot sessions.

Great DVD-Player! Plays evereything homemade you put in! (tested with Tevion-CDR, BASF-CDR and Yamaha CDR-W, burnt at 4xSpeed!)
Thomson DTH-4500 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $400-500 This is the brand new Thomson dvd player (in France). It plays VCD, SVCD, MP3 in all bitrates CBR and VBR, all on CD-R and CD-RW.All these options are included in "standard". It's clearly mentionned on the package and or the notice. This model includes a dolby digital decoder.

New great player! plays vcd, scvd, mp3 in all bitrates CBR and VBR...incredible! all on CD-R and CD-RW ! this player must be in your list!
Thomson-DTH 2000 No No     Tracksdata Disk work at 1-x-speed if you write with 2-x-speed they end up a bit patchy and the sound is not playable I have made vcd's with five kinds of Re-Wirtable Disks and all work With no prob's at 2-x-4-x Speed writes have fun

It Plays ANY CD-RW's in VCD Format But will NOT Play copyied Disks as Follows
Kodak Gold Ultima, BASF, Verbatim, Maxell, 1-One Pro.
All of the above are 650Mb / 74 Mins
80/Min Disk's that will NOT work are
Infinit Plus Professional, Philps.
The Thomson DTH 2000 will play Copied VCD on
TRAXDATA DISK Burnt at 2 Speed Only I have NOT tested MP3's yet
Thomson-DTH 2500 No No
Thomson-DTH 2600 No Yes     Silver with green Dye CD-R didn't work.
Thomson-DTH 3300 Yes No   $300-400 i´ve uses cds which are silverblue! they worked well even at 8x recording. golden and most other cds haven´t worked at all
Thomson-DTH 3600 Yes ?   $500-600 Doesn't seem to be able to play the SVCD sample. VCDs written on silverblue CDRs work great ... although I haven't tested other brands of CDR media.
Tokai 715S Yes Yes MP3,SVCD
Tokai 723 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD,miniDVD $100-200 Plays MINIDVD!

Have it tested SVCD with CD-R and CD-RW from various brands:Samsung,TDK and others. Firmware 3H:region free but macrovision always on.
Toshiba SD1009 No No   $200-300 why the fuck did i buy this piece of shit
Toshiba SD100e Yes No   $200-300 Fuck i want to watch my cdr-vcd´s!!!!!! Real waste of money ...

Seems to work ok with Infiniti CDR
Toshiba SD1200 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 Found Kodak CD-R gold failed. But Sony & Verbaitam CD-RW works fine. Haven't tested Kodak CD-R Silver/gray yet.

Updated info: I used NERO to burn. It Will play mp3's burt on SONY's DATA & Audio CDR's. I didn't try Sony's Audio CDR's yet. It Will not play mp3 burt with Nero on TDK, Maxell, Memorex, Imation, CompUSA, Tandy(RadioShack).

Plays VCDs burned on Prime Peripherals 80Min CD-Rs.

TDK and Imation, and Kodak CDRs (all 650MB media) did not work with neither Nero5 nor Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4. No burned audio cds worked on these media types either, but did work on the Memorex 650MB and 700MB CDRs. Memorex 700MB CDRs did not work with SVCD or VCD.

This is a single laser player. It's pure luck if you get it to read a CD-R. If you want to read CD-R's don't buy this one!

Plays SVCD & VCD encoded with Panasonic MPEG1 encoder at bit rate 2500k...Pretty good picture quility. Works great with Memorex Platinum cd-rw with Nero 5.0 combination.

Plays VCDS on all cd-rws that are silver, gold, or black...Only play burnt music if it converted to wav first.

Works with PNY 80Min CDr's which you cna get for free after rebates, Silver coated, Also used Memorex Platinum CD-RW disks, work good.

Worked well with memorex platinum RW encoded with "TMPGEnc" and burn with video cd on adaptec eazy cd creator 4 deluxe. The sound quality seemed to be improved

pasific digital and HP cdr dont work. PNY used to work great but the last spindle of the cdr hasnt worked at all. It will always play black and silver cdrw. Still trying to find a company that the cdr's work. If anyone has tested sony, tdk, or imation let me know please.

i
Toshiba SD1209 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 My DVD playter can play the SuperVCD perfectly burned with Nero 5.0.3.1 on both CDR and CDRW media at the bitrate upto 2.6 MBps. It also can play XVCD at bitrate upto 1900 Kbps. (My DVD player is modified for zone free.)
Toshiba SD1600 No No   $200-300 Too bad this DVD player doesn't read any VCD...not even the pressed ones.
Toshiba SD2006 No No   $400-500 This is an early model, the manual states that it will only play DVD or Audio CD. It will only play pressed media in those formats.
Toshiba SD2008U No ?     I rented this DVD player from Hollywood Video, so I imagine all Hollywood Video stores rent this same DVD player. It will NOT operate original VCDs nor will it play CD-Rs. I haven't tried CD-WR.
Toshiba SD2107 No No
Toshiba SD2109(b) Yes Yes   $200-300 I've had some success using "That's Write" CD-RW discs (www.thats.net) which are silver coloured and fairly highly reflective. I haven't been able to get hold of the same brand CD-R discs to try.

Plays VCDs on CD-RW media, used Traxdata discs, worked fine. Tried many brands of CDR media, none worked.

Have had no luck playing VCD on CD-RW media (BASF, ACER, Memorex, Hewlett Packard). Traxdata discs are hard to come by here.

Perfect results so far with Memorex 1X2X4X Part No 829125 CW-RW discs. Traxdata CD-RW work but pause occassionally - OK at beginning but poor towards end of VCD. Tried SCVD (using Nero to burn) onto CD-RW but player didn't recognise the disc

I have tried these cdr's and they play vcd fine... The disks are made by Sirrus, but are manufacted by Postech Corp, the dye they use is called Cyanine(Type 1),they are pale green on the bottom. These are 80 min disks.

I tried Princo CD-RW with succes

I noticed that some have had luck with VCDs...I haven't...i tried burning CD's on both PNY CD-Rs and Memorex and neither worked for me. According to the site people have had some luck so I guess i should just try some different CD-Rs...I'll keep you posted.
Toshiba SD2200 No Yes   $200-300 Only tested with Acer-CDR. Works, but getting some freezing and jumping. Also, a few distortion (not related to compression) pop-up

I have gotten XVCD playback working with CBR at speeds of 2500kbps and higher using TMPGEnc and Nero. Additionally it will play VBR encoded mpeg1 streams as an XVCD at some decent bitrates, which increases the picture quality to storage capacity ratio considerably. Again, this was done using TMPGEnc and Nero. And as another bonus, I have heard that this player will play both PAL and NTSC encoded VCDs to an NTSC display with no trouble, but I haven't tested to back this one up. CDRWs work great, and you might as well use them, since they're not that expensive anymore (if you buy them in quantity)... Plus, the select few CDRs that do work with this player cost as much per disk as cheapo CDRWs from buy.com. And on a sad note, although you can clearly see the "SVCD" phosphors on the front panel, it chokes on all SVCDS, even pressed ones. Too bad...

VCD Worked with Memorex Platinum CD-RW.

This player is a bit finicky - it would not play VCDs on Maxell or Imation CD-Rs (blue backs) but I have had success with Acer CD-Rs and CD-RWs. The bottom line - I assume that any CD-R or RW with a highly reflective coating (silver or gold) will work! Will not play with the following cd-r-brands maxell basf memorex mitsumi.

Does not play SVCD at all :( Plays VCD perfectly with Memorex CDRW media. Could not get it to play VCDs with the following CDR mediSony, Imation 1-4x, Memorex CDR Platnium, Kodak Ultima Gold, and Kodak Ultima Silver. However, VCD playback worked perfectly with Princo Silver/Blue CDR Media! No mp3 support
Toshiba SD3006 No No     only good for dvd and normal cd audio(no cd-r and cd-rw)
Toshiba SD3107(e) Yes ?     Play vcd v2.0 on sone cdrw light grey one(burning with nero soft and phillips cd writer). Can not play svcd
Toshiba SD3108 No Yes     this player will play about any VCD burned onto CD-RW, but with many missing blocks and sound errors, except for the Verbatim and Fujifilm CD-RWs i have tried so far
Toshiba SD3109 No Yes SVCD $200-300 Plays VCD & SVCD flawlessly if you use CDR-W disks. Will play VCD's if burned on Princo CDR disks, all oothers have failed. Lots of noise though on the CDR's, wouldn't recommend using the CDR's if you're gonna burn the movies for this machine. Stick with CDR-W.

Unable to get player to recognize CDR's. Tried Maxell CDRW Platinum, Sony CD-RW650, Ricoh CDRW High Speed 10x. Player would recognize as VCD and play, but video was blocking and almost no audio. Tried creating MPG file with TNMPGe and Pinnacle Studio DV, both were blotchy. Tried Nero and Adaptec Easy CD. Tried recording at 2x, 4x, 8x, 10x, no luck.

Does not play cd-r of any sort. also tried cd-rw (traxdata) plays but very poor ie freezes and misses blocks. According to LCD panel, plays SVCD, and since this specific model uses a completely different panel compared to other Toshiba models, I would put money on the fact that it does

I have successfully tweaked my Toshiba SD3109 DVD player into playing VCD's. All I had to do was to take off the outside DVD player cover, remove the 5 screws holding down the DVD player to the chassis, remove the DVD face plate from the DVD player, angle the DVD player up at a 45 degree angle so I could get to the under side of it, then I had to turn the POT (potentiometer) every so slightly clockwise, which resides on a brown circuit board that is attached with a white ribbon cable. Then BAM! I am now enjoying VCD'S, DVD's and CD-Audio Disks!!! I have had complete success with different brands of Silver/Green CDR's. However, I have not Tried CDRW's yet but I heard that they would work too. Email me with any questions.

Does not play cd-r at all but works on Sony CD-RW650 have
Toshiba SD4109 No Yes   $200-300 Did not work with Mr. Platinum silver/green CDRs or PNY silver/silver CDRs. Tested this one in the store.

"Did not work with Mr. Platinum silver/green CDRs or PNY silver/silver CDRs. Tested this one in the store." He says it doesnt play cdrs which is true but it lists that it does play cdrws, I have tried both but neither works. CDR Brand - 74min Memorex CDRW Brand - 74min Memorex Platinum Neither of these worked. If you know of a different brand of cdr/cdrw that works please tell. [email protected]
Toshiba SD4205 Yes ?   $400-500 I really like this player but I was pretty disappointed when it didn't play my SVCD discs. Please note that these were the first svcd discs I've burned, so perhaps a change in CDRs or a different burning program or something else would have helped. I was using cheap 20 cent CompUSAs with Nero 5.0. Using the same cheap CompUSA CDRs with Adaptec, though, it played my VCD just fine. I've only made one VCD, but it worked great.
Toshiba SD5109 No No     This unit will play 'original' VCD's, but will not play cdr or cdrw media at all.
Toshiba SD6109C Yes Yes   $200-300 Please keep in mind that this specific toshiba model is NOT a standalone DVD player. It has as digital tuner with it. Tried burning standard vcd on a memorex high cap. 80min. cd-r, but would not play at all. Need more info on a working method for this player.

plays vcds perfectly burned with Nero 5.0 on Princo silver/blue cdr media, but only at the standard 1150kbps video bitrate. tried slightly higher video bitrates (decreasing the audio bitrate to keep within the 1374kbps system bitrate) but playback was "glitchy".

update: glitchy playback on higher video bitrates was due to cheap Princo CDRs. playback of mpeg1, 2600kbps video bitrate, was flawless on CDRW media by Princo and STI Certified Products (Circuit City cheapies).

plays VCDs and XVCDs flawlessly on compusa cd-rw media, as well. will NOT play variable bitrate mpegs (SVCD), or non-standard NTSC (352x240) or PAL (352x288) resolutions.
Toshiba SD6200 Yes Yes   $600-700 CD-R compatibility is a selling point of this player, and it's worked fine with the cheap media that I use -- as well as with any CD-RW discs I've used for testing. The player doesn't appear to support SVCD, although burned VCDs and XVCDs work fine.
Tredex TX-8303 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 Is perfect I burn plany of vcd in 5 or 6 types of cdr from diferent brands and generics also all of them play with no problem . it plays nice also all my mp3 it gives me a list of the foder and the name of the songs on the scren.
United DVD 1155 ? ?   $200-300 Where can I find more information?
VCD Walkman Yes No   $300-400 Portable Vcdwalkman wich plays cd and vcd very hand!!!
WESdër AV-200 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 Plays EVERYTHING !! XVCD,VCD (1.0 & 2.0) at any bitrates & Svcd. Mp3 with a max bitrate of 256kb CBR DD5.1 decoder included !

think this player is a clone of the revoy 2200 and the GPX DV2000 It has a ZORAN Vaddis III chip inside and the player is a DLS-701A from DVS All these players are based on the ZORAN Vaddis Player A really good bargain indeed since the decoding chip is a state of the art (almost there is now the Vaddis IV)...
Wharfedale 750s Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 Brilliant player for all those UK DVD "virgins" who want a budget player that performs relatively well. It's very good value for money: DVDs-Multi-region,plays RCE encoded DVDs.. VCDs-work fine SVCDs-lip-sync problems MP3-work fine CDs-work fine you can also use Nero to create "slideshows" of your jpeg image files for viewing on your DVD player! OVERALL A TOP-CLASS BUDGET PLAYER THAT IS AN IMPROVEMENT ON THE WHARFEDALE 750 FOR THE SAME PRICE!

Awesome Machine (Real upgrade on the original 750), eats all types of CDR CDRW not had it spit out a disk yet even the cheapest around!. And the MP3 audio playback is a great bonus, 10/10 Top Notch all around

New updated player 750s. Will play mp3's and HDCD. Every cdr make I've tried has worked thats about 12 different brands from cheap Mr Data to Traxdata, TDK, Sony, and Verb's. S model has quicker response time and extra features from old 750
Wharfedale DVD-750 Yes Yes SVCD $200-300 Many reviews claim 750 ( original, not 750s )can play VCD on CD-R and CD-RW, but I've had nightmares trying to make it work 100%. Having burnt with Nero, on a variety of media at various speeds, all disks 'lose synch' or something, picture freezes for a second and sound gets "warbly". Pausing the player seems to re-synch it and will then play over parts which previously 'stuttered', so it doesn't look like a formatting/burning problem. A shame, because, when it's working in the good bits, it's great and plays fine.

Used TMPGEnc mpeg-1 encoder and then burned to VCD and S-VCD using Nero this gave playable results, other encoders tried didn't (problems with audio, AV-3 issues). The spec for the DVD-750 specifically excludes VCD and S-VCD and advises you not to play CD-R and CD-RW media but the machine itself actually recognises video CD by displaying the media type on its led display. Strange hey but I'm not complaining. For a UK Tesco outlet offer its good news all round. (£180 sterling)

Not tried SVCD but plays audio on CD-RW

I haven't found a brand of CDR/CDRW media which doesnt play on this excellent value for money machine. It played your SVCD cif image without a hitch on a cheap unbranded CDRW. If I knew how to produce a mini DVD I'd bet it would play that too.

This baby seems to play anything you put in it. And yet over here in the UK it is sold as a "bargin basement" machine!

It seems to work with all the media I've tried including rather cheap looking media purchased in Italy for under 20p (640 lire!) The player also plays images greater than the VCD standard and up to full 720x576 as long as the bit rate is less than 2000. The only snag i've had is that the DVD begins
X-Wave Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 Plays everything so far, even has karaoke inputs, region free and macro disable functions i'm told, i'm well pleased with it. ps if youre a city fan dont buy this cos its crap, manchester united fans do it , got mine from aria m/cr £177

tip: if you want to play a recordeable dvd its better to buy an unknown brand.
Yamaha DVD 795 No Yes     Couldn't test VCD on CDRW, but definitely no CD-R at all !!! NO MP3!!! Superior video quality with DVD on RGB, but not usable for 'home-made' things.

normal VCD /including menu structure/ works with TDK CDRW and Adaptec VideoCD Creator. (It plays audioCD written to TDK CDRW with Easy-DC Creator, too!) Other brands and burners not tested, yet. Couldn't test VCD on CD-R capability, but it probably won't work, because can't play audioCD on CD-R either.
Yamaha DVD 796 No Yes   $300-400 Can Play Maxell CD-RW, but not Maxell CD-R. Haven't tested any other discs as of yet.
Yamaha DVD S700 ? Yes   $300-400 Playback VCD at datarate up to 2450 no problem on CDRW Dysan. Jerky playback at 3000 kbit/s.
Yamakawa 780 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $200-300 Only problems with FastForward by playing SVCD. SVCD burned with Nero 5. I´m very happy about the Yamakawa 780. Also it plays Mp3 (with subdirectory!) very well. I tested various CD-R and CD-RW with no problems!

It can play perfectly 720x576 SVCDs with high bitrate as high as the VOBs which I extracted the MPEG-2 video samples from and converted the AC-3 sound to MPEG audio 48 Khz 192 Kbits/sec and muxed this with TMPEG 12a Encoder to a 720x576 high quality SVCD ! I also encoded my own DV-AVIs in 720x576 25 frames/sec progressive DV recording to MPEG-2 via TMPEG and it looks almost as good as the priginal DV movies ! Great quality. I also managed to get at least video to play when demuxing a VOB to M2V video and AC3 and remuxing it back to SVCD. Mabye the AC-3 multichannel sound comes now out of the digital output ? ( I don´t yet have a digital AC3 amp !) The video is playing perfect, but the integrated AC3 to stereo converter is muted during playback... Too bad miniDVD does not work... Maybe I have to do a HEXEDIT of the Firmware to find a way to enable miniDVD ? If somebody had the knowledge of the player firmware, please compare it to the Afree firmware on the www.robshot.com site and let me know, if you can adapt it to the Yamakawa 780. Yamakawa 820 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 Works fine with all common mp3 frame rates eg. 32, 64, 128, 192, 256, 320 frames per second. Does not show id3 tag infos.

Fuck i want to watch my cdr-vcd´s!!!!!!
Yamakawa AVphile 713/715 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD $100-200 This player is bullshit ! bad picture- and tonequality at DVD´s. mp3 is ok, but that´s all. It´s better, to go for dinner with my wife for that money.

I think this Dvd player is one of the best one. It costs 199 $ und can play everything that is on any cdr. DVD - CD - CDI- VCD - SVCD - MP3 everything. :-} And the best Landcodefree. You can update the rom over the Internet. (Need a Burner)
Yamakawa DVD-780 Yes Yes MP3,SVCD,miniDVD $200-300 Nice Player that plays MP3's even if they are in Subdirectories. Picturequality is good. Plays also not Standard VCD's.
